I briefly supervised Brian Liddy and Paul Harper before they went to the CRASH unit. They were very hard working, still looking for criminals near quitting time, while everyone else seemed to be submarining to get off on time. Liddy was also a very thorough note-taker, while on scenes of incidents. His reports were top notch. Paul was a very quiet and professional. I knew little about Ortiz, despite being a fellow sergeant in Rampart. I hope they all eventually recover from this experience. As far as only Perez and his partner (Durden) being the only dirty Rampart CRASH officers, I'm a bit skeptical. When I entered a locker or other room where Rampart CRASH officers were present, they'd stop talking. I left a month before Perez & Durden shot Ovando. I was shocked to see Durden get into CRASH after only a month in Rampart. There were officers who'd worked there for years, who could not get into the unit. That told me, way too late, that something was foul. I returned to Rampart in 2002. We worked hard to restore morale and reward to good cops who did nothing wrong, but had to wear the stain of Perez & Durden.
