John Barry died on 1 June 1979, two weeks into making Empire, collapsing on set from a sudden mennigital attack at just 43. After only Lucas and Gary Kurtz, he is the third crew member mentioned in the credits. So glad we have just some audio and video of him that survives! RIP Sir! Your IMMENSE contribution to Star Wars will live forever!

I love it! You're right that he is in the top 3. I wish more fans were aware of him. GL and Kurtz, along with Kershner, get the accolades while John Barry's name gets lost in the shuffle.

@@stuwars8289 Strangely, mennigitus is a contagious disease, however no one else on set caught it from Barry. He was born the same year as my grandparents (1935). But Grandpa died in 2016 at 81 and Grandma is alive and well at 87. That's just another painful testament to the fact that John Barry left us way, WAY too soon.

@@stuwars8289 Also, Graham Ashley, who played Gold 5 ("They came from behind"), died in 1979 at just 52. Same year as Barry. I haven't found Graham's cause of death, but it's just so sad that those two guys had such an immense impact on the franchise... yet only got to see A New Hope
