Actually this stuff is well-known among medieval historians. Galileo didn't pop out of nowhere but was the climax of a very long tradition of philosophy and mathematics. The people that don't know at least the gist of stuff are the same that believe that people of the medieval period believed the Earth was flat.

Need to sort out you Video and Audio quality(s) -The high frequency buzzing/cycling beep humb is some kind of digital humb maybe (a shot in the dark guess) from one of your connections (wires / "ground loop humb?" ) and being recoerded into your audio. And then, when using images i.e. the one of the police wagon with "being offensive is and offence" maybe consider downloading higher resolution images so they're not blurry. -Then upload to youtube in Minimum 720p. Because we can hear the buzz and we cant read the images Not to mention vocal distorion but that's probaly a mic thing ( at least that's the first thing i'd check). Friendly intentioned suggestions. I liked your presentation style and the use of slides, to refer to the questions aswell as being an interactive way for us viewer to follow along / actively partake in the topic Just would be helpful if you paid more effort into audio-visual quality as its not the best , to be a bit blunt. . hope this feed back helps, But if not then tell me to stick it I suppose ;) Have a good one and keep 'em coming!!
@vortexalerand9949
@vortexalerand9949 7 ай бұрын
great topic, you obviously have some good stuff to share, a learned guy, but if it's not listenable then .... there's only so much buzzing and distortion one's ears can manage. I know i'd like to hear more of your presentations.. I noticed that the buzzing only was present during your voice recording, but not from the video clips i.e. the police video etc. So there's the first hint in the process of elimation.

Actual slippery slope = I'll slip and break my arm, won't be able to work, end up on the street, bum the last cigarette off a secret service agent, he'll be busy buying a new pack while the president is assassinated, then the country will be overrun with Chinese communists. Its effects with nonsense cause or massive chasms of reasoning. Issue is as with most debate, morons misattribute fallacy to any argument they can't defeat.

Slippery slope is fallacious BUT its also proving to be quite accurate with the Left - give em an inch and they take a mile.. they went from sexual revolution/gay marriage - to full on trying to force Pride kink onto children in schools, and making everything gay in movies, and shoving LGBTQ in everything they can thnk of

The slippery slope is fallacious when no reasoning is given to support why x would lead to y and so forth. There is a vast difference between deductive reasoning and a slippery slope

Slippery slope is a fallacy, because it does not logically prove anything, to make a slippery slope argument you need to say what standard or cause will go from one thing to the next. Gay marriage is a slippery slope to Pedophilia is a logically sound statement only if the argument being given for gay marriage is "all love is equal" If the argument for gay marriage is "consenting adults' love should be respected" then pedophilia does not follow. The slippery slope fallacy is when someone implies something will lead to another because they have some similar quality, the non fallacious version is just a logical argument similar to mathematical induction. The fallacious logic is the unproven slippery slope.
@charlytaylor1748
@charlytaylor1748 8 ай бұрын
Nice input. I'm still not sure about having 'logical fallacies' directed towards the furture.. If p then q is fine in the abstract, but 'if we do this, then this will follow' is a different sort of argument. I think.

The fallacy, is that it’s always a slippery slope, just because. A slippery slope doesn’t have to be a fallacy. It just is, in general, and it’s not a good argument to use, in general, as the sole argument.

Yes, I'll go along with that. I guess what I object to is its inclusion in lists of 'bad arguments' when it "shouldn't" be there(?).

In this case, as long as they're detained without charge and released within 24 hours, you haven't violated their statutory rights, but you've acted prudently within your legal power as the police. Thus, the actual principle involved of habeas corpus is intact.

@charlytaylor1748

There are lots of sitcoms I've missed out. This instalment (part of a much longer enterprise) could be hours long in theory, but yes, Hancock would have been an interesting story. With another sad ending. Maybe I should have included the Australian tour that Bramble and Corbett did. And I'm sure our US friends will have similar complaints. Anyway, thanks for the comment and we must romp on...

Going back to early 1990s', there was one privately owned 35mm print with English subtitles (the BBC dubbed it). I was privileged to have screened the same print many times at a Regional Film Theatre, always on a Philips DP75 pair. It was, of course, all in splendid (dye transfer) colour. It looked lovely on a big screen.

In the interests of balance it should be pointed out that Matt Ridley, whose book The Evolution of Everything you rightly praise, has publicly recommended Speech! as "a genuine intellectual feast of ideas" -- and in private correspondence called it "truly one of the most intelligent books I have read in a long time." Perhaps that's because he correctly understands that it is not a book about language, but about the consequences of language -- as the subtitle makes clear. Just saying.
