Starting at about 5:40, Herr Schenker gets very inventive; for the first time that I know of in this song he's departing from the key of E minor and playing in various modes of E major over the implied E minor tonality of the underlying riff. He's also splitting up the meter into varied divisions with his phrasing. Many of the notes are muted with the palm of the right hand, hammered-on or pulled-off, and others are emphasized with a pinch harmonic technique, creating contrasting textures. I wouldn't call those "garbage" or "bum" notes -- that's intentional.
