I run an 18” on my 261, 20” on my 461 and 25” on my 661. There is a 36” in reserve but so far it’s only been used for milling, not felling or bucking. On a 400 you may find a semi skip or full skip better if you have the bar nearly or fully buried in the wood from a power standpoint. You get the benefit of the 25” length with less cutting resistance and better chip clearing. On a 661 full house Stihl Rapid Super chain completely buried isn’t a problem but the number of trees I put saws in that need it is relatively small… when I need it I need it. Keep in mind that for felling 2 1/2 times the bar length is the max diameter you can handle… that requires carving out the middle through the face cut. Bucking is another issue… generally no more than twice the bar length.

I very much appreciate the know how! 🫡 I’ll keep those things noted.

I runa 36" bar to save my back ... running a skip tooth chain there are not that many more teeth to sharpen using a light bar it balances nicely and I can stand up straight bucking .
@EdgeOfTheNorth2 күн бұрын
That makes sense👌 Like BBR says, “Stand up and buck!” Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

@@EdgeOfTheNorth Maybe I should add, that my go to saw is a 661 with a 36 Tsumura light bar on it . I am 6'4" and for me that is the right length . I rather run a larger saw that gets more wood cut in a shorter amount of time. I accept the extra couple of pounds in weight and save the time doing a given job. I don't have to run the thing for 8 hours a day. Usually ya cut down a tree of two and buck them up for lumber a the tops fro firewood. With my set up I can do that job in half the time it takes someone with a short bar and smaller lighter saw. I have a 311 with a 20 inch bar and tried it out.

What are the dimensions of your trailer, and also what size axle? I’ve seen a few 5x8s online. They’ve gotten my attention, as I sell 1/4 cords. I’m thinking one would be a nice addition to my equipment lineup. I stack into my trucks,…but I think a small dump trailer would be better than my trucks and my 7x14 dump trailer.
@EdgeOfTheNorth6 күн бұрын
I’d love a 7x14 Mine is 5x8x3. That’s why I have to stack it in tight and high to fit a full cord. It’s rated at 4,000 lbs. Not bad for single axle. 👍
