I applied the Prestain then used the walnut stain and then the next day used the warm satin poly and it’s been over 6 hours and still has sticky spots. Should I sand now or wait or remove ?
@MinwaxUSA
@MinwaxUSA 3 күн бұрын
Hi Tyler. Once your project is fully dry, you can begin sanding. Paint dries faster in warm, dry conditions and slower in cool, damp conditions. A temperature between 70°F and 90°F is ideal for paint drying. High humidity slows down the drying time of paint, as the moisture in the air prevents the paint from drying properly. If possible, try to increase ventilation in the room. A fan works great if you have one!

OK so how do I test a small inconspicuous spot to test and see if it'll work? Do I have to buy a can of the stuff, take it home, open it and test the area? And if I don't like it what? Take the opened can back to the store and say I don't want it now then get something else?
@MinwaxUSA
@MinwaxUSA 6 күн бұрын
Hi Frank. You can purchase a half-pint to test a small spot, it’s a convenient way to see if it’ll work for you. If it’s not the right fit, many retailers may not accept a return of opened products, so we suggest checking with the store’s return policy beforehand. Some retailers also have stain charts on real wood pieces, giving you a clearer idea of the finish before you buy. If you have any questions, we're here to help!

I wish I had read these comments! I bought the semi-transparent in a shade of white for the frame of a newly-installed custom window which has a very nice quality wood that I didn't want to hide under paint. I've done a lot of paining and staining in the past year and felt confident taking on a new product. What a mess! I was very diligent with prep but this was too thick and dried before you could blink - no workability. If you do want to try the semi-transparent, do not use a brush. Follow the instructions given in a previous comment to wipe on and immediately off with a cloth. When I was trying to fix my mess, I did this in one area and it was much better. But I have since sanded it all off as best I can and will paint instead. Very disappointing, and a day wasted.

I have an Amish made table with what was pretty decorative grooves. Time and a few guests have depleted the stain in these grooves and they are hard to keep clean. I was planning on using a color match wood fill to fill those grooves that is slightly darker than the table because I plan on staining to match the wood fill. I am going to cover with polyurethane to make cleaning this table a bit better and protect the wood. I also have an old 1970’s Montgomery Ward coffee table (solid pine) that I’ve decided to do the same thing to. Do you think it will work?

Thanks for contacting us. I'm sorry that the clear has remained too tacky to sand. Did you use Fast Drying Polyurethane or Polycrylic? A few things that could cause prolonged drying would be over-application (applying the clear too heavy), applying the Clear over a stain that wasn't fully dry/or over unabsorbed stain, and/or low temperatures/high humidity. Can you tell me more about which Clear you used, what you used it over and I'll do my best to help. Respectfully, R.C. Digital Care Team.

Be aware: If you use a solvent based stain, instead of a water based dye, you will have outgassing that lasts for months. Unless you then cover it with shellac or at least three coats of polyurethane water based varnish, people will smell it, find it disagreeable, and make you take the frame back. You cannot use solvent based stains unless you don't need to use the frame for at least 6 months.
