Good explanation but in Canada higher merv 13-14 is cheaper than lower 11-12

Great info, thanks for sharing. This 3M filtrate 1900. Surprisingly allows more airflow when it’s dirty than the 1500, 1000, etc because it has much more pleats and surface area.

Do you think these are as good as Filtrete? I always run the filtrete merv 13 mpr1900. Looks like hdx has something almost comparable spec wise but visually the filter element in 3m filtrete looks better.

Project Farm did a test of furnace filters recently. It's not just about MERV rating, it's design too. I use a 1" 3M 2200 filter (or 1900) and as he shows in his tests, the static pressure is relatively low for the level of filtration you're getting. I've never seen a furnace with a greater than 1" allowance for a filter in 36 years of home ownership. If you're in an actual cold climate (i.e. here on the Canadian prairies), those low MERV filters will leave your house full of tons of dust. All of the forest fire smoke these days also makes it necessary to use a better filter. I've been using these filters in my house (built in 2012, high efficient NG furnace) since new and have never had an issue. I keep an eye on usage, don't let my wife control the thermostat(!), and change the filter every 3 months, unless we are having a cool summer.

I'm curious about how this filter was after a month or two? You mentioned in your review of MERV 13 filters, you would keep track of the performance over time. How long before this filter became clogged and too restrictive?

When comparing a new Mer8 to a new Merv 11 (of the same make), the static pressure drop was less on the Merv11. The issue then becomes that the Merv11 technically will need to be changed sooner because it will trap even finer particles ( if they are present) than the Merv8. I do not believe that the pressure drop between the two would be significantly different after two months of use.

Parafin candles I would never use. Definitely use soybean- a soybean blend is ok if the blend is with coconut wax. Bees wax is also a good clean wax.

My merv debate was settled when I read the initial resistance measured in water coloum at a given cfm. It's printed on almost every filter. All brands are not the same. Example: a 3M merv 12 is almost twice as restrictive as a merv 12 honeywell. So you would think the 3m filters twice as good right? Not the case. What really blew my mind was a merv12 has lower static pressure than a merv8. This is using a 20x25x4 honeywell. My static pressure went from .5 to. 2 by INCREASING the merv. YMMV.

Been using a MERV 13 and now switching over to a MERV 11 by Aprilaire. I was told to change this so ill see how much of a difference it makes
@DrWhoRocks333Ай бұрын
I also have an Aprilaire system, 4" depth. Who advised you to change from 13 to 11?
@victorstandiford9724Ай бұрын
The thickness of the filter is also relevant. My Bryant unit had an insert that could be removed to allow a 2-inch filter. That will lower static pressure due to the increased surface area, and they will last three months.

So i have HDX for 5 (merv 8) which I’m currently using the last 3 months. But thinking to go to the 1900 3m merv 13 because you said it still had low static pressure drop and better filtration. You think that’ll be okay? My return size is 18 30 1. Just a had new 4 ton system installed in may.

All wax will create soot, drafts, untrimmed wicks, wrong size wick will contribute to soot from your candle.

Nice review except an air flow resistance of "0.13", (iwc?), is useless without a corresponding cfm.

Love your filter commentary. How about the AIR X Airbeast or High Flow Merv 11 filter?? Says it allows 65% more airflow... due to more pleats. Can you review that one and do a pressure drop test for us? Thanks !!!!!!!!!!

Without a filter, my unit can take in 3400 CFM. With a MERV 5 3M Basic, that drops to 1800 CFM. Yikes. I'm thinking about switching to the cheap green ones...

With smoke from wildfires being a reoccurring summer event in our area, this merv 13 filter is all we use. In winter months, I scale back to a lower merv rating.
@NickWindham23 күн бұрын
Interestingly, the lower Merv rating 3M filters actually have about the same static pressure when they’re clean but more static pressure than the 1900 when they are dirty. It’s because the 1900 Has Way more surface area because it has way more pleats.

3M is a highly static charged filter. U of M turned them down after test showed efficiency dropped 33%. MERV A rating is what counts for efficiency. I work for Camfil

MERV 13 1" Deep is a lot different than MERV 13 12" Deep. . I rum a MERV 14A 12" DEEP Change it every 2 years. deltaP is .18". stay with the 1" track MERV 8. It's fine for the coil. Add a UV lamp to remove viruses and keep your coil clean

Hi Don. I liked your advice on this MERV 5 - 3m Filtrete Air Filter. I sold the 3m Filtrete air filter back in the mid 1980's when it was licensed to the Allergen Air Filter Company in Houston TX. It's the same media used in their 3M N95 Face Masks. 3M started to sell their 1085 air filter to big box stores in the early 1990's. I spoke a lot with Larry C until he retired in 2016. There would be no problem using MERV 11 or 13 air filters if they doubled the size of the return air ductwork and plenum.

I have five filters in ceiling returns. 2 20X20 and 3 14X14. Really only the two in the more lived in area ever look dirty when I change them. If they will fit would it make sense to use 2 or 4 inch filters to have more serface area with the higher MERV at least in the two areas that collect more debris? Thanks.

Thats a pretty poor excuse for a text. For one your doing it in a laundry room where there is microscopic lint in the air and also right on top of a water heater. If that water heater is gas heated far more soot would be coming from that not the candle.

Hey there, great video! Just had to replace my AC unit. Tech basically said don’t get anything to expensive for filters, didn’t really get technical. Just picked this up MERV 8. Wondering if that’s good enough, my size filter is 18 30 1. Was looking for filtrete but can’t find any MERV 8 or MERV 10. MERV 11 is the only one filtrete in my size but wondering if going to that is to restrictive or just stick with the HDX MERV 8, there only like 6 bucks at Home Depot!

Would using a 5" Nordic MERV 13 help with the pressure drop? I use the 5" one with the really deep V pleats and I always thought the increased surface area helped with that. Never had a problem and I change them every 60-90 days. I used to use 2" filters and I realized the box would take a 5", no looking back.
