I would have attacked it totally different, glue pads with a stretcher first , that releases tension and pops the dent up . Saw the guy from San Diego do it a while back , thought he was crazy at first . Then watched the magic appear . Saved lots of time and turned out perfect . Also wood backing and a pump air wedge works wonders . Take 10 techs and each do things differently, learn great tips from all.

The best video I have watched on PDR Straight away you explained the impact direction, then followed through with a step by step of the "why" you approached the repair in the way you did. I have watched dozens of video's on PDR Tom, this one video alone will teach your viewers more about PDR than all the videos I have watched combined. I have subscribed and I look forward to watching more of your videos, thankyou.

How much would a repair like that cost
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 5 күн бұрын
Pricing varies a lot across the industry and across the globe to be honest, so it really depends on where you are, as to what it might cost you to get a similar repaired, for me this was around £150-200 if I remember correctly, I did it alongside another dent my customer had on his other vehicle so gave a price for both repairs together.

Nice job Tom what glue did you use they hold well , i'm using snow white glue sticks they are very strong and remove easily , pulled a Porsche rear wheel arch it was pushed in 1/2 inch i used 250kg winch post and glue 3" glue tab i was shocked glue held , i got it out enough to fill and paint as custom has already polish through the paint so could not see any point getting every bit of the dent out

@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 5 күн бұрын
Thank you, Aluminium is tricky because it doesn't respond in the same way as steel. Steel has more memory so it wants to go back to its original form where as aluminium usually require a bit more persuasion.
@dannoi
@dannoi 5 күн бұрын
@@LearnPDROnline may I ask what you would recommend when attempting aluminum ? perhaps more heat and softer pulls ? since AL is also more brittle I worry about it cracking
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 4 күн бұрын
@@dannoi Yes heat can help, If working with a bar from behind the dent, I may start with softer/broader tip to limit unwanted high spots in a large dent and to push more metal with each push, but often the micro lows/highs in the finishing stages can require a sharp tip to finish. In my experience hot glue pulls pretty well on Aluminium, the metal loses heat quicker than steel though so if you can, its good to set up a constant heat source such as hot air gun on a clamp or stand facing towards the panel. If the damage is towards the very edge of a panel then yes you do also have to be careful of the panel splitting so work slowly and accurately.

@lebleup

So I gather that the preference is to approach this crease from the inside first if at all possible. Then the next option would be using the glue to pull it from the outside as in this case accessibility is not possible from the inside.
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 5 күн бұрын
To be honest it depends on the individual repair. I started off by checking what access there was to the whole panel and thankfully I could access it through the rear lamp area and also from underneath. The main dent I used hot glue pull methods to help me reduce the large dent quickly and cleanly, but the small creases either side of the main dent were easier to push from the inside.

Thank you! It does get tricky towards the end that's when the fine details (and a whole lot of paitence,😅) matter most. When you get to that stage, its usually about your board position, to be able to read what needs doing next, so either moving it back 1-2 foot or tilting or both can make a huge difference!

Excellent work, I am unable to tell where the dent was. What about vehicles that are much older, like from the 60's, 70's and 80's that might have thicker sheet metal? Do you use different tools? Thanks
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 20 күн бұрын
Thank you! The process is similar but yes I may change the tools slightly on older cars, as you say the metal is usually thicker so when I am pushing, I may use the same tool but have to work harder, or at least apply more pressure. The other thing to consider with older cars is the paint. I do not usually use glue pulling at all on classic cars, the paint was different then and can be easier to crack or pull away from the panel. Using heat helps with this but the risk is much higher compared to modern water based paints.

@LearnPDROnline

Yes, roof rails can be difficult as there is no access to the inside of the panel and there is also a lot of tension because it is a narrow panel that is also curved.

My advice is to use PDR glue, it is very affordable and designed for the specific purpose. It generally has a better adhesion to give a stronger pull than standard craft glue and it is designed to peel off the paintwork easily with the right products so less risk of damaging the paintwork, I use this stuff - bletools.com/collections/glue/products/10-x-high-strength-clear-glue-sticks

The last 20 seconds of the video is with natural reflection, ie no line board. We use line boards to help us see any remaining damage in the panel, reflection boards amplify any imperfections in the repair area. 👍

I have a 2021 Dodge Challenger with a very small ding on the rear c-pillar. A local PDR guy said that the only answer is glue but that it is difficult because that part of the car uses high strength steel so he doubled the price. The very shall ding is about the size of a quarter. The car does have a graphene ceramic type coating. Will the glue stick? the ding is in the center of a wide C-pillar so no edges or paint damage at all. Any advice? Thanks for your help!
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline Ай бұрын
Yes, when we come across dents on pillars, it does usually mean glue pulling is required due to limited access to these structural parts of the vehicle. HSS does make the dent trickier to repair but the coating shouldn't be a problem, if they remove it for the repair then you may wish to get that section recoated again. If the damage is in the centre of a flat section and not across the corners or edges it should be fine for a PDR repair 👍

@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline Ай бұрын
The short answer is 'as hard as you need to' in other words you have to tap down the high hard enough to move it, if it doesn't budge then there may be tension in another area that needs to be released first, or potentially an obstruction on the inside of the panel, start slow and gentle and gradually increase power until you get the result you need.

Watching a number of your vids while trying to prep my daughters first car which is a peugeot 207 with a few prominent dents but fresh paint over them including one in the outer sill where it looks like someone used a jack and it fell off that's similar to this one and no internal access. 30 years ago I worked as a vehicle inspector and did basic rectification and paint touchups and cutting paint back etc on brand new cars and quite enjoyed it before moving into computers in the 90's so its a bit of nostalgia in a way. On the 207 sill I've glue pulled most of it out and tried to tap down outside the crease but the last bit of the centre is stubborn so I stopped to do more research and get a lightboard before overworking it and I see I need to do some work on the tensions around the edge to create the conditions to get the rest of it out. Too old now to make a career out of it, but I like to do everything myself.After the 207, son's has a old Astra G that was cheap because it is covered in golf ball sized hail dents, and I think I'd like the challenge of that to progress after on too. After 3 decades of computer security, its really theraputic...
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline Ай бұрын
I am glad you are finding it therapeutic, I get like that when I am in the flow with repairs. Yes it is difficult finishing, most people struggle to get out the last 20% of a repair and this is where either training or stubborn determination is needed lol. It sounds like you have the right approach taking a step back and doing more research most peopl have a tendancy to rush which is actually the slower way long term. We do have a few retirees within our training program, also not looking to make a career just enjoying the hobby side of it helping friends, family and staying active. Good luck to you and If you really get the bug for it get in touch 👍

@LearnPDROnline

Good question, the answer - It is a personal preference there is no right or wrong, If lines make more sense to you, use lines. The majority of people seem to get on better with fog however whenever I hear a tech say you shouldn't use lines it just tells me that they do not understand how to use lines themselves. I've tried both, I prefer Lines. I did a short video a few years back to show the difference between the two - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJKZg2OqrKeVldEsi=GnB3JxGfrGD5O_K7

A bodyshop told me that a dent like that with the crease in the middel will have cracked the undercoat, so that will rust soon from the inside. Any opinion on that?
@LearnPDROnline

As you can see in the video, the undercoat was not cracked, therefore I was able to fully repair the damage with Paintless Dent Removal. Traditional bodyshop repairers do not usually have any experience carrying out Paintless Dent Removal themselves so often do not really understand what can and can not be fixed. Most bodyshops I know sub-contract in PDR specialists to carry out repairs like this.
