a few of my favorite French films in the Criterion Collection from what I've seen are Purple Noon, Belle de Jour, The Young Girls of Rochefort, La Belle et la Bête, and Blue is the Warmest Color. I also love Portrait of a Lady on Fire and really like Godard. hard to choose a favorite of his but I find Breathless the most rewatchable. Jean-Pierre Melville's films are great, too, but the ones I prefer are currently OOP from Criterion but do have Kino releases: Le Doulos and Léon Morin, Prêtre. Arrow has a couple boxsets of Claude Chabrol's films which you might be interested in considering you liked La Cérémonie.

@codyinthecinema Very good. I think I'm a sucker for Anthony Mann. I've seen all his low/mod budget pre Western films, Strange Impersonation, T-Men, He Walked By Night, Raw Deal, Border Incident, etc, and I love every single one of them. Naked Spur was my first Mann western, but I'm still reeling by just how perfect I found Winchester 73 to be. Like the Platonic form of a Western.

This is a genuine Jimmy Stewart 1950's western complete with a bunch of well known character actors! Plus - as a bonus - the most decorated U.S. solider in WWII Audie Murphy in a co-starring role. He found his mark as an actor in westerns! The story is believable and the acting is good. And the bad guy is Dan Duryea, one of the most versatile actors of his generation! Thanks for highlighting this gem. It’s such a great, great documentary and made me go back and discover the rich vein of Italian cinema I was ignorant of (but in hindsight I do wish he’d touched on Commedia all'italiana more). That said, I find his personal journey through American cinema to overshadow it, it’s one of the best documentary series on film, told by a film lover with deep insight and humility. You can tell how awed he is by these films regardless of his own successes. Both documentaries are an education and give a wonderful overview of film history.

Ann Savage plays Vera in Detour. Her meanness is the twin to Tierney’s twisted madness. The coldest and darkest hearts, even worse than Phyllis! On Criterion, Short Cuts and The Graduate immediately spring to mind when I think of quintessentially California films. Kiss Me Deadly follows them. These are total classics to me like Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce and Paris Texas. I was lucky to see Mildred Pierce again at the cinema last year and was completely absorbed by it, so assured in how to tell its story that I fell right into it. Made by master crafts people at their peek. An overlooked gem is Thieves Highway, a San Francisco set noir, with the great Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte. Thanks for highlighting some true classics.

What an amazing film, totally blown away by it! I thought it should have ended when they rode out of town to their inevitable deaths, the end, fade to black. But they had to tie it up with a more palatable and softer conclusion, for the times I imagine. But overall I loved this film, bleak and raw like the landscape, with superb performances by Ryan and Ives. The 1990 Hamlet adaptation with Mel Gibson was an interesting effort, but suffered from a severely truncated text by director Zeffirelli, presumably in the interest of a shorter running time and to make it more palatable for 'the kids'. Gibson may have been big box office at the time but in the movie he looks like exactly what he was: a 34 year old actor of limited range grappling with a Mount Everest of a role while also trying to act 'younger'. Despite the flaws, however, the film does have an atmospheric setting, a tone suitable to the story, and an absolute gem of a performance by Alan Bates as Claudio who elevates each and every scene he's in. Propero's Books (1991) was the closest chance John Gielgud had be part of a screen adaptation of his beloved The Tempest, but the defiantly art-house direction style makes this film somewhat less than viewer-friendly. On a happier note, I do enjoy the various filmic attempts by Orson Welles to bring Shakespeare to the screen. His efforts, while admittedly a mixed bag, contain moments of vision and brilliance, and Welles' vocal delivery is invariably sublime.
