As always, Love the content. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to start drawing myself this last year. Hope you have a wonderful Holiday season, and of course, I would be honored to have any of the three examples on my wall. As for what went wrong in the Sand person drawing, only you as the creator would really know, for all we know it might have been intentional. I was trained as an Architect and not an illustrator so I am not catching it , besides art, is what the beholder makes of it. If it makes them happy to view it then it's good.

Honestly, I love these videos. I have a question for you, more so advice needed. I was drawing seemy frequently for a while, took a break to game with friends at night instead of draw, gotta try to keep some social life. But one day I just stopped feeling like drawing. Idk if it was from not feeling like I was progressing the way I want to or what. But there were other aspects of my life that just changed. My question is, have you ever felt like that? And how did you get over it? Just one day, interests just stop.

The not a snowman is fun! 😆 Haven’t been near the ocean in far too long. And snowmen (even the sandy kind) hold special memories in my heart. 😌 Playing around on the channel to find what continues to ignite your wonder and intrigue our curiosity sounds fun. I’m newer to the channel and lean towards a silent follower enjoying the process of thought and skills practice. Learning is a slow crawl for me - practicing around life these days without the pressure of more other than joy and calm. I am not artistically trained and new to fountain pens and inking, so process videos allow me to absorb some “rules” while listening for some why’s as I build some form of drawing foundation. That also means it’s not clear to me what didn’t turn out well for you. 😅 🤪 Thank you for this share tonight and the rad postcard designs. The Nib Forge and Nibcracker are also wonderful and I agree with someone else - the textures are great! May the remainder of this year be kind and the holiday season feel nourishing for you and your family. ☺️

The nib size is written on the side nib unit ( the green part where nib fits ) also all the pilot parallel pens are colour coded. So the green one is always 3.8mm, the pink one is 3mm so on.

Makes sense. You should probably get 3-4 more pens, just in case. I like to get 6 of them, and place them in between my fingers, like Wolverine. That’s a more advanced technique though.

Your warmup excercises look both fun and functional- yes I’d love to see a video about them! I’m also imagining them with a wash of colour as textural collage papers. I’m always struggling to find sketchbook paper good enough to do the job while not being so amazing that I’m scared to ‘waste’ it. I love that the artists loft one is so good for both that you’re comfortable using it for both warmups and sketches.

I think I have around 40 pens and a handful of those are perfect, there is no aspect that needs to be improved upon for my enjoyment, so those are the pens I rotate through. I like to get inspiration from how other people are using their pens, so I love your style of videos and enjoy hearing your insights.
@stepheninks4 күн бұрын
I wish I had 40 pens. That would be a good downsizing goal for me. It is kind of fun to try out different things just to see what’s good, and that’s kind of what this channel is all about, but you could totally Thanos-snap half of f my pen collection, and there are only a few that I would really want to re-buy.

What a liar you are, Stephen. You need a pen. Correction: you need 10,000 pens. You have a problem. But you only need two pencils: a Kuru Toga Dive and a Delguard 0.2 or 0.3

By all means, do the video’s you want to do - changing things up keeps the content fresh and a big draw to your channel for many of us is how genuinely nice you are. That said…I have a book recommendation for you. It’s very light, quirky and humorous and it seems like something you might get a bit of art inspiration from (I have, but haven’t finished it yet), imho. It’s called “Here Be Dragons” by David P. Macpherson, and it’s on KU. Happy belated Thanksgiving, it sounds like you had a wonderful time with your family!

Hi Stephen! I purchased an ultra fine nib Platinum Curidas retractable pen, in clear plastic, after watching your video about it. You replied to my comment about how fine it draws with carbon ink. I love it! It’s a bit high maintenance but works well with a light spray of silicon lubricant inside to make the mechanism run smooth. Thank you, Eddie 👍🏻👍🏻

It is important to enjoy what you have rather than pick it apart with dissatisfaction and criticism, then hastily replace it for some unfilled urge. I enjoy adding to what I have within set parameters. Does it complement like items or add meaningful variety? Is it something new that will enhance an one or more aspects of my life without potentially adding a hardship or stress? Have I allowed sufficient time to ward off the impulse acquisition? Next, after a little more time and deliberation, decide whether interest is diminishing, then research the benefits and product/service shortcomings. Finally, if the juice still seems to be worth the squeeze, put that product to use. For myself, it feels a little like adding something to Thanksgiving dinner. Does that expensive herb add something worthwhile, or am I likely to try it once, only to let it get pushed out of sight and mind until it loses efficacy? More videos such as these are good content, as long as the time spent making them feels like a healthy allotment. Variety of content keeps things interesting and balanced. Perhaps a bias towards grabbing some minimalist tool and recreating an impression of some memorable or provocative moment that week? What made you grab that specific tool, and why did that particular moment grab you? Then, perhaps an occasional product review.

I'm actually purging pens, I got down to 39 briefly but am now back to 40. My reasonable target is 36, but that would mean getting rid of some very nice pens, which is hard. My original, unrealistic target was 24. That'll be the day.
@stepheninks9 күн бұрын
Haha. I want to only have enough pens to fit in my 60pen case, which I’m sad to say isn’t a thing right now. I’ll need to do some giveaways. To be honest there are plenty I can give away before I have to make some hard decisions. Oh well. I’m a work in progress too.

I agree wholeheartedly, people and experiences are much more important than purchasing things. My wife and I had a wonderful Friendsgiving with two of the four friend groups we were invited to. We are looking forward to spending Christmas and New Years with the friend groups we were not able to visit on Thanksgiving. We are truly blessed with many diverse support groups and family here and that is what we were thankful for. Glad you were able to spend time with your family over the holiday week. Absolutely love your your channel (and the Significant Otter). To be honest, it isn't the pen reviews that keep me coming back to watch your content, it's you and your approach to life on this planet. So, in short, you do you and we will continue to watch. Have a wonderful December and Happy Holidays to you and yours. Thank you again for all your hard work this year.

Maybe in addition to great drawings, some videos about caring for the pens we have and are grateful for? I love diamine registrars for drawing, and I'd like to get into some colored pigment inks that can also withstand tombow alcohol markers (DR does great), but I am nervous about putting them in my nicer pens because I don't know how much trouble they will be.

Sir could you please guide me which ink converter should I buy for pilot metropolitan fountain pen.
@stepheninks9 күн бұрын
Your options are limited with the Metroplitain. It takes the con-40, but not the con-70. I think the Metropolitain comes with a converter, the Con-b. It works okay, but you can’t see the ink level with that one, but being free is nice. The one I talk about in this video is also great, but just to be safe, I recommend the con-40, which is well made, but doesn’t hold that much ink. Another alternative that a lot of people prefer for the Pilot pens is to just buy a blunt needle syringe and refilling old Pilot cartridges. You get at least one free with the pen, and replacements are pretty cheap.

I have the M2 in several nib sizes, even fude (same nibs as Black Forest in three pack on Amazon). Other than wishing it was a little less slick, it’s my EDC go-to. As a bonus, I made a couple of pocket sheaths from some scrap leather to keep them from banging around in my pocket.
@stepheninks10 күн бұрын
A must for metal pens. Mine are kind of scratched up (though I don’t mind that as long as they still work).
@lorenknowles152111 күн бұрын
I have bought several of these. I have the art supplies addiction. They are great pens for every day carry along with a pocket sized sketchbook. My only complaint is that they are a little slick to hold. I would like to see some texture on the barrel. Besides that they are great.
@stepheninks10 күн бұрын
I noticed that as well, and it might be more of an issue in hotter/more humid climates… but it tends to be mild to slightly nippy over here on the central coast of California, and I haven’t seen the texture bother me nearly as much as I though it would. It would be awesome if HongDian made a few different iterations of this pen in some other finishes. Given how popular it has been, it is certainly a possibility!
@runedart504817 күн бұрын
“But teacher, he was also destroying downtown Tokyo” gave me fits, lol. Personally I loved the Michaels sketchbook, it was exactly what a sketchbook should be. Scrap paper, process, quick idea’s, the artist’s version of a junk drawer. I think they’re more interesting to look through than finished pieces, tbh. And now I’m curious about the Dynamic Bible book as well.
@stepheninks15 күн бұрын
I keep forgetting that sketch. I have to do it justice, but I’m still trying to get over my fear of drawing busy cities. I think more artists should show off their mess.
@runedart504815 күн бұрын
Maybe so. I have to make a conscious effort to overcome my reluctance to fail and focus on accepting that is how I learn and build that skill set/muscle memory. Decades of seeing successfully completed artwork kind of hardwired the braincells. And decades ago, I *could draw lol. So part of me knows how to get there, but it also knows it’s doomed to disappointment. That aside, I took the Muji pen for a spin and it was everything you said it was - I really like it, thank you for featuring it! I found mine to be very smooth too, contrary to some of it’s detractors. At least on Rhodia. My sketch is a Canson multimedia, which mostly seems to dislike all forms of media equally. *shrugs*
@runedart504818 күн бұрын
I’d enjoy seeing more of your process videos, if you were comfortable doing them. I agree, I can’t imagine many artists don’t have sketchbooks full of preliminary sketches, short of the “urban” sketchers, maybe. On a channel dedicated to fun pens to art with, I can’t be the only one that would enjoy it. :)
@stepheninks15 күн бұрын
I appreciate that thought. It has taken me a long time to be confident enough to put out videos about just my art, to be transparent. It would be lovely to do more like that. Glad to know at least one person would watch it!

I have this pen. They have updated the brass machining. It has a circular pattern on the entire pen now, which makes it so much nicer and grippier. It also has a nicer converter. I replaced the nib with a TWSBI 1.1 stub and I absolutely love it.
@stepheninks15 күн бұрын
Did you have to pull the nib out of the plastic collar to make it fit, or does it just naturally fit this pen? I need to find a stub nib that I like. My one experience was super negative, and inspired my “I hate this pen” series.
