I always hear that the main downside of these old olympus E-P cameras are their low res screen and how it makes it hard to get the focus right with manual lenses Is it really that hard all the time or you can actually get used to it / master it?
@JR-lx8nn2 ай бұрын
Interesting, but more complicated and costly than MY solution - which is a $35 film-to-digital adapter that mounts to the front threads of a lens and you point it at a suitable light source, such as a white card in sunlight or a 5600K indoor lamp. Works a treat and is really easy to use - especially for slides. Just my take - thanks for yours! Good. JR

Weirdly, my biggest challenge is getting a film holder! :) I am based in South Africa, so buying from Amazon, makes shipping too expensive for a cheap product. I might try 3D printing. I am currently using a diy one, but not too crazy about it.

I was ready to do this exact thing, but then I found a v600 for $150 on eBay yesterday. Technology making me lazy again...

Nice. I liked when you keep the perforation of the film. I do that too sometimes. For scanning I used two my existing lenses front-to-front through adapter (using filter thread of both lenses to join them) and my film holder was DIY (first cardboard, then 3d printed). I attached film holder directly to the lens and thanks to that the camera shake was not an issue. I also used the light from the window (because my square LED light had vignetting and colors shifted across image and also I don't believe that LEDs can give accurate colors). My next plan is to try somehow applying speedlite as source of light for scanning, I hope it can provide quicker and higher quality results. So I think if you already have some non-macro lenses, the budget can be even smaller. I also enjoyed magnifying much more than required, looking at grain, I even assembled one ultra-high-res scan. I've used AE bracketing for everything and detail and dynamic range of results were much better than in scans I've got from a lab that developed my film. For editing I use Darktable or RawTherapee or GIMP (with G'MIC & DCRAW) - everything is FREE, powerful, handles negatives well (have specialized features for that and of course you can just use curves there too), and for me less annoying compared to Adobe products.
@KenDFilms2 ай бұрын
Thank you! That's cool, which lenses and camera do you use? Using light from the window? I gotta try that sometimes. I do still get some light leaks and vignetting from the LED or the film holder, I'm still figuring and testing out different methods. Do you post your scans anywhere like Flickr or Lomography? would love to check out some of your scan results! I've used Darktable and RawTherapee too but I guess I'm just more familiar with Lightroom and NLP seems to be very quick and easy.

+ I recently shoot with a IXUS V3 a lot. With the aid of the Topaz AI softwares, you may be surprised to find out how good the images are comparing with a modern digital camera by increasing the magapixel of the image and having the image sharpened a bit. I love color of the CCD sensor, and it is amazing to see how accurate the meter works, as well as the white balance.

Do you have any tips for manual focus with the LCD screen? I have an EPL-1 and got my first manual lens - TT Artisans 25mm f2. The magnification feature helps, but still very challenging outdoor in sunlight.
@KenDFilms5 ай бұрын
It's always gonna be a challenge without a viewfinder and using on a LCD screen that's not bright enough. In bright sunlight, the only thing that really helps me is shooting is something like f/8. Less shallow DOF means it's easier to focus. The image is usually sharper too at f/5.6 or above

Dehancer is no longer a thing. Now that resolve has the film look built-in… dehancer is obsolete.
@r.a.mpictures6 ай бұрын
I've tried both, and Dehancer is still superior for now! Not to say that a few more updates won't tarnish its usability, but for now, it's still a lot better regardless of price.
@KenDFilms6 ай бұрын
Interesting input! I’m glad they added this in the new Resolve update, it'll be very helpful for sure, and will push Dehancer to continue innovating. Who knows... we might see them drop the prices a bit. But even with the new update, it still does not offer specific film stock color profiles like Dehancer made by a color science team, or the amount of film emulation customizability that plugins like Dehancer and Filmbox provides, I believe it's is still superior in most ways.

One consideration: the IBIS on a LOT of E-P1 cams fail and cost far more than the camera to repair. This happened to mine after minimal use and no abuse. When I searched to find out why 'IS1' was suddenly flashing red on the display, I discovered this is a common issue with this body. YMMV.

$50? lol, not in australia, thats for sure. cheapest bodies are sitting around the $200, while some of the usual japanese sellers have some listed at close to $1k. Very cool video! I was recently on the hunt for more pocket-friendly compact digital camera. My main shooter is a Fuji xt3, and I wanted to stick to that system. I settled on the xa2 which I scored for about USD $250. I get to use all my lenses on that little guy. The 16 mp Bayer sensor is sufficiently different from the xtrans in my xt3. Great video and a pretty cool steal (for now lol). I'll keep an eye on your channel!
@KenDFilms9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I haven't had the chance to use the Fuji system yet, as I've mostly been within the M43 system. I know the X series almost has a cult following. Those older models still tend to be pretty pricey too. Do you have a suggestion for an easy entry if I ever want that Fuji experience?
@junaidmalik18099 ай бұрын
@@KenDFilms lol yup, I won't deny the cultish following. For an affordable entry point into the x system, your options are pretty limited because of the current craze. I'd say the consumer oriented A series, from a-1 through to 3. Prices aren't yet insane for these ones. They get knocked for their inferior build quality which is fair. The build on my xt3 is leagues higher than my xa2. But what you get is the colour science and essentially the same sensor that goes into the xe and even the xpro lines. It's the stock Bayer version of the sensor and not the fancy Fuji xtrans upgrade, as I'm sure my fellow Fuji shooters will be quick to point out. But that distinction doesn't seem to be that discernable, especially since you'll get the core Fuji simulation filters anyway with the lower line. You could always pair it with the ttartisan 27mm f2.8 with af or save more and get a manual focus ttartisan. Another consideration is selling up within the system. I got a used x100s before demand went totally crazy. After having fun with it for over a year, I flipped it and it funded the lion's share of the cost for my xt3 and Fuji 23mm f2 weather sealed and af lens. The value on my xt3 has since gone up notably. Though I'm hard pressed to sell it to fund another upgrade. I love it for the time being, and it's more camera than my abilities as a hobbyist. Still, I am pretty curious about their medium format line... Especially the GFX 50R... It'll have to wait, as that jump means committing to new lenses, and investing more out of pocket cash, when I should be just getting out there and snapping more pics with my existing gear.
