Smooth rocks versus jagged rocks. I would take kelp covered Basalt shown in the vid over the Coral Limestone we have here in Okinawa, Japan. It is not smooth chalky limestone like the White Cliffs of Dover. Oh no. It is compressed, crushed coral shards that are the equivalent of millions of broken glass bottles glued to together. Even the beaches are nothing but chunks of broken coral (sized 5cm to 20cm). Only a few here run composite boats and they had to make special trolleys to launch from the water like a jet ski as they can't risk surf launching direct from the beach. I have six Poly boats (3m WW to 5m Touring) and all the hulls look like they have been attacked by a pride of lions on Meth. Every one of my boats gets at least one hull resurfacing session per year, with my two favorites needing gouges filled/hull resurfaced at least 2x year. When paddling rock gardens, besides wearing a bump helmet, ones needs neoprene dive gloves and rash guards, even during the 40C summer months. Even walking the shallows, one needs dive booties to avoid cutting up ankles.

Really like that you show how much more awkward and hard it is to try head and upper body first! Our sea-kayaking instructor did the same, and it's remarkable how much easier it is to pop the boat back up and then just follow it.
@onlineseakayakingАй бұрын
Glad you like it 😎 It's also good to get people to feel how difficult it is and really feel the contrast.
@DakiraunАй бұрын
@@onlineseakayaking For sure! On the very first into-to-rescue course I took, the instructor also had us try to get back in our kayaks after falling out before giving any instruction as to how. Trying things the wrong way always makes for great contrast when you learn the right techniques.

My wife and I are new to kayaking, after purchasing a pre owned KAPE Arctic 5.85 and a Delta 16 which included 4 paddles. Two of these are EPIC Wing paddles and I prefer them to the other two which are Euro paddles. As a rookie the Wing gives me good performance and confidence comparable or better than the Euro paddle. Still learning and wearing a big smile !!!

1 inch tubular webbing + 3/8" shock cord = custom tow line. Mine lives from stern cleat to my Cockpit with a rock climbing carabiner. Resists salt water and is great for quick hook ups. The shock line takes the jerky nature out of the line when its just under tension. Kayak long enough and someone's bound to need it! I also have a parachute dredge anchor I clip to it when I just want to chill in the wind without losing ground. Tbh the dredge anchors are ok but just barely better than none.

@SmokinSkatinJamminАй бұрын
pretty sweet stern pirouette/pivot. in interested in how you get that quick rotation while vertical. im interested in what your blade is doing behind that wave.. looks kinda like a high brace while vertical by the waist, transitioning into a draw stroke to lock the stern on the wave.. guess ill have to take the class lol
@onlineseakayakingАй бұрын
The rotation is actually mainly dictated by where we look, but we are using the paddle mostly for support than anything else 🤘

Excellent quick overview! I absolutely love traditional paddles and use them exclusively these days. I like that this straight away mentions that they are used _completely_ different than a euro paddle; that fact is so often misunderstood when people try them. I hope you post a bit longer overview for folks too - great way to get people interested with this.

Hi Simon. I Converted to wing paddles 12 years ago. Now use them exclusively. I got the new Epic twist wing at the start of this year. Even more efficient for forward paddling. Occasionally, I will try my euro paddle, but it feels like water spills off, whereas the wing has a full catch. Using good technique also creates a bit of lift that partially breaks the wetted hull surface for more glide.

Excellent quality footage, I'm an instructor in France and this is very helpful. Any clue about performing CPR at sea while far from shore ? I'm working with elderly sea kayakers so my 1st thought would be put them on my deck and start the process after the mayday call
@onlineseakayakingАй бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, glad you're finding the footage helpful! When it comes to performing CPR at sea, rafting up is generally the most practical approach. You can stabilize the situation by rafting the kayaks together, then perform CPR across the boats. This will give you a more stable platform, making chest compressions more effective. As you mentioned, a Mayday call should be your first priority to get help on the way as quickly as possible.

I understand that most techniques will be covered in the course, but do you mind quickly sharing if edging while performing a sculling stroke increases effectiveness. I’ve heard arguments made for both yes and no and I’m curious. Thanks
@onlineseakayaking2 ай бұрын
Great question! The effectiveness of edging while performing a sculling draw actually depends on the shape of your kayak. For many sea kayaks, especially those with a pronounced keel, edging toward the paddle can be more effective. This allows the water to spill more easily under the bow and stern, giving you smoother movement and better control. So in this case, yes, edging does help - but it’s all about understanding how your specific kayak responds!

In that situation its just a case of unloading the boat into big bags, Ikea bags work great. Combine this with a trolly for your boat and you will be all set.
