Your first 'file' is actually a rasp, not a file. As for soapstone counter tops, I can't imagine a more inappropriate stone to use as it is simply not up to the job. Granite or larvikite is the way to go, much harder and far less prone to scratching.

Why do people oil the stone and turn it all black? Natural state looks so nice. I dont understand this? If you want black, you can also get black granite, honed if you like the softer look, or leathered. I like how soapstone lighter colors look, and that is the direction I am leaning, but, can it do a 12" overhang....Likely needs support. Also, it may not be the stone to use if you are going to pound dough, or meat or some harsh work on the counter.

Soapstone counters are a pain to 're-level' and remove the surface wear. Corners are easy, like the video, but deep scratches in the top are a different story. Maybe you like the beat up or 'natural' look, but it's not going to be flat if you are only sanding down areas. Compared to other materials, lots of maintenance. But nice to the touch.

Thank you! I had soapstone countertops installed when I renovated my 1910 Queen Anne bungalow kitchen last year. They are absolutely gorgeous, period-appropriate, don't burn, stain, and are food safe. I use Boos oils (or other food safe oils) and wax periodically. I have a couple of small dings I need to sand out, so I appreciate the instruction video. The beauty, soft look, and "hand feel" of soapstone just can't be matched by other natural stone products.
