I lived in Florida until I was 33 I'm 36 now I still own a house down there that I rent to friends and I visit once a month but just assume if there's a body of water that there's a gator in it. But don't think that we don't go in freshwater. We absolutely do. We just don't jump into random lakes and retention ponds. People go rafting and inner tubing down a bunch of the rivers here. Like Ginnie springs chasawiska weeki wachee rainbow River etc unlike Nile and saltwater crocodiles Gators typically avoid people unless they are in the wrong place at the wrong time or have lost their fear. But generally they're going to hightail it the fuck away from you. But we snorkel scuba dive water ski jet ski wakeboard fish inner tube swim etcetera in all kinds of lakes rivers and springs in florida. It's just that you stick to the ones that have either designated swimming areas or the springs which are clear cold water and generally Gators stay away from them. They will at times go into them but it's difficult to ambush in Clearwater is like that and there's usually a lot of people so if you're in big groups they're generally going to stay away. It's when you venture into Mercury vegetated filled water without a lot of people around where you can be ambushed. Or if you walk your dog on the bank or jump into lakes and rivers that are not smart to swim. People have to realize that millions of people go into the freshwater for different reasons all across the state every year. Despite that, since 1946 there's been 450 bites. Which is less than 6 per year and only 30 fatal. Which is less than half of one a year. We had almost an 8-year stretch where we didn't have any fatalities. Usually there's anywhere between 0 to 1 fatality a year if it's a really bad year there might be like 3 or 4 but it's almost always a stupid mistake on the part of the human. I guarantee you if our rivers and lakes were populated with saltwater crocodiles like over in Australia or Nile crocodiles in the numbers that we have alligators, no one would go in the water ever. It's a noticeable difference

If you’re visiting Florida for the winter, just swim in any fresh water. Go for it. Especially if you’re from New York or Pennsylvania. Just go wild. Gators are rare.

That is a croc not a gator look how short the snout is, he is more aggressive and deadlier than a gator, he has more bite force too 😢
@CapOlimar8 күн бұрын
That's one hundred percent a gator, the only species of croc in Florida is the American crocodile, and it looks nothing like the American Alligator. They're also quite placid when compared to their cousins in Africa or Australia.
