The back of those cabinets is mold food. If you ever have high humidity or some water intrusion that will look like a Furby of mold. Every back of every Ikea piece I owned in Malaysia and Singapore frosted over with mold. Ikea knows this but in Ikea's arrogant attitude, refuses to change anything. Same attitude with metal bed I bought. I bought one metal bed for my daughter. It was great. So I bought a bunch of the same ones for my corporate rentals. Well, they had changed the design to make the box smaller. All of the beds failed in a year or two. When I asked about this at Ikea everyone knew they sucked but Ikea kept selling them. And when you buy something that is screwed into a wall, it doesn't match the wall stud spacing in North America. Ikea expects you to use a stupid wall anchor to hold something heavy. They always fail and the shit falls to the ground sooner or later. Well, Ikea is nifty for sure. Lots of options. But who knows what stupid shit they will do.

I agree with the IKEA quality. I’ve hastily built Ikea cabinets/drawers and they come out misaligned and not the best. But when you carefully install it correctly which can include additional fixes and tricks, it comes out a lot better and last longer.

Are the graffiti on the outside walls part of the decor or are they welcoming signs from the local gang?

Plant ideas for peg board: for top left pot - another one like the one you put on your ladder desk above your computer area. I don't know my indoor plants so well. It looks like a kind of succulent that has vertical stems with the round 'leaves'. One that has drape is string of tears (ovoid) or string of pearls (round like peas). An unusual one 'Frizzle Sizzle' Albuca spiralis, dormant in summer and puts on growth in winter with curled foliage. I watched your kitchen tips and checked this out too. Very nice approach to our videos, pace is slower but not too long, allows info to sink in. Thanks

I think this might be a problem with being in Canada….I’ve seen designer KZbin videos out of Australia that have the most awesome electrical outlets and switches. I was considering trying to order them but in order to change out the entire house plus I don’t how much the delivery costs would be and if there’d be duty charged it seemed out of reach. I’m in British Columbia and I’ve noticed even IKEA doesn’t give us the same options they give the USA and Europe. It’s like the rest of the world thinks we don’t have any taste. 😢

How much more would the costs increase if a basement was excavated and formed? It’s more expensive to excavate, but you increase living area by 50% while maintaining the existing footprint. And what if that spoil could be distributed evenly around the lot, rather than hauled away and dumped offsite?

5:23 - white sinks stain??? My first thought was "no they don't - what nonsense". Then I heard the sound of items being placed into a white sink that was clearly not vitreous glazed porcelain. If anybody wants a white sink, go for vitreous glazed.

Floor heating sounds good, BUT when there's a problem they might break open the floor to solve it ... I thought if this 2 and at the end we chose for AC, I ❤ it! It's warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

We installed an IKEA kitchen as a stopgap between an expensive room remodel and putting in "final" cabinetry, so we didn't spec out upper cabinets and the layout is wonky because we weren't trying to plan to keep it. That was 12 years ago, and we've never gotten around to ordering the final cabinetry. I've been shocked at how differently we used the space without upper cabinets, and while I now want the upper cabinetry, I also know how I'll use the cabinets far better than I would have based on my original design. We've talked about replacing the kitchen properly with IKEA, but haven't made any final decisions. We did put in Warmly Yours electric heated floors. They allow you to send in your room drawing, and then they lay out the product on their system and give you a quote with instructions for how to use their mats, how to lay them out, and where to connect the junction. They're incredible. We have them on a timer. They do heat the room beyond the kitchen, which has leaky windows and crap heating, but it's never enough to do more than very secondary warming. Now that we're replacing some of the windows in the room beyond, it should be much more cozy and the floor will do more work. It's not the cheapest, but it's SO worth every penny, along with using large, 20" tiles, which allowed for minimal grout lines. Of course, they discontinued the cabinet range a few years after we bought it, so it's impossible to retrofit to match, and we'd need to start from scratch, which sucks. But it's been reliable and I haven't had any problems with the cabinetry at all, just learned about design choices and things I do differently than I thought I would.

Remodeling our kitchen, stripped to the framing (to raise the 1972 sunken ceiling). Like you, I will tile all the way to the walls so can use an exposed-leg oven and rearrange counters in the future. Sinks and fixtures are always changing, so try to allow for future designs. Re comfort, perhaps wire the microwave to run w/ door open, to heat people directly and save on the heating bill.

No way IKEA Kitchen for rentals, won't last couple of years. Particle board and water don't mix. Should be OK for office but not bathrooms, kitchens or anywhere that might be exposed to water. I get my cabinets from Chinese granite and cabinet suppliers. Their cabinets are plywood caucus and hardwood face frames doors and drawers. They also do the computer design for you and often time all material in stock for immediate pickup including stone countertops, matching backsplashes, tile flooring, sinks, hoods, almost everything. Big box stores like HD and Lowe's are much more expensive for the same equivalent. Disadvantage - lousy service, speaking Chinese helps but you save tons of money. Just like the defunct Fry's Electronics, cheap but you take the abuse.

Nice and beautiful kitchen. I would never install a white sink. As for me, I hate white. I love dark brown.grey and black. I love dark colours so in my house, all my furnitures are either dark brown, or black. Even my sink are dark brown. Because white stains easily and as for furnitures, they might just turned yellow overtime. Same goes for my clothings, I never had a white colour clothings. It's all black, brown and grey. I love dark colours though.....

Black and white sinks are definitely no-no in kitchen. Just get steel. They will just be a lot of work to keep clean. And get heated floor, always, everywhere. If you anyhow can. It's more efficient, and more importantly, it actually heats the thing your body is in contact with, the floor. And it will also make your home overall more nicer looking since there's no radiators and whatnot.
