Robotics. Geordi has cybernetics. Others in star trek have them as well. Strength. Like Picard said, there are numerous extremely strong species. Like the Gorn. Asking a question about computational speed, and memory storage. We all have memory, and a speed that we think. Individuals with cybernetics also. I think all of Rikers arguments we deliberately weak. He did not want to loose Data. Data was his friend. But he still had to "Try".

"its responses dictated by software written by a man" - no, it gets more complex than that, these days. Its responses trained by observation and interaction with humans ... Just like ours.

Look at the hope on riker's face when picard objects to removing data's hand. He's praying that picard has a good reason he can't do this.

"I have an ultimate storage capacity of 800 quadrillion bits" That's 100 petabytes. That'll be achievable in consumer-grade storage devices by the end of my lifetime, nevermind the 24th century.

This was one of the best episodes from Str Trek TNG. I'm not sure if TNG would have lasted 7 seasons without Data.

I was 4 years old when I first saw this episode and because of how good Jonathan Frakes' acting was in this scene, I misremembered thinking he was the one requesting the recess and walking out of the meeting room, disgusted in himself. It was maybe 20 years later when I realised my mistake.

Technically, this was a direct examination of a hostile witness, not a cross-examination. Riker called Data to the stand. Picard did the cross.

Dr Soong could have left some records behind. Like data sheets or something. But he is like me. When I write code or whatever I never write really down what I do. It is all in stored in my head, which is dubious to begin with.

What does shutting data off proves, exactly? You can "shut off" a human being using various methods, that doesn't mean we aren't sentient beings.

1:49....."My total linear computational speed has been rated at 60 trillion operations per second." - And now, just recently here in 2024, Microsoft's new Neural Processing Unit for Copilot AI operations is rated at 40 plus trillion operations per second. If we're already making NPU's with that computational speed, then 60 trillion operations for an Android 300 to 400 years into the future feels......pathetic. BUT.....this episode was done in the late 80's aha :D Computing expectations were I guess, a littler different back then!

Why didn't Picard object to the point about Data's purpose? This is ambiguous at best. There's no solid proof at this point that Soong created Data to serve humans. Probably would have been sustained.
