I understand the PEZ dispenser will be used next launch. But.. with dummy satellites that will follow and renter close to the upper stage entry point. Is this because the altitude isn't LEO? Just wondering why they would waste a launch if it could stay up there... I am not a rocket doctor, just curious. Any takers on answers?

a vertical payload door and some revolver type mechanism might use the volume better. or at least allow for sattelites larger than the 9m diameter
@That_Awesome_Guy1Күн бұрын
If those are the size of the pins and that actually works that would explain why they chose this over landing legs. That is so much lighter.

They added catch pins already, they are so fast :D
@sja45ukКүн бұрын
They are not designed to catch the ship, but just to discover what the effect of future catch pins will be on plasma flow !!
@gregsteele806Күн бұрын
Those catch pins are non-structural aerodynamic simulators. Test devices to see how that area reacts during reentry.

I find it interesting they're using a crane to do that since they already put the energy into designing a starlink loader prototype. I know the current literation of the sat is probably quite different, but still. And it looks like the guy in the green sweater stole Tory Bruno's hard hat!

but why they make a starship used only for starlink? i reffer it of the gate open. you have 1000m3 but only a door wich open what 20m2? I think a satelite can benefit if is a wide open door so they dont need to fold satelite before launch.
@Madison0921Күн бұрын
This is still in development. The door is designed to maintain structural integrity and aerodynamics while optimizing for different mission needs, spacex understands what you’re thinking even better. Elon once said the first payload to Mars would be a Cybertruck and an Optimus robot

We know the sats are dummies, but that lifting jig/load spreader looks awfully refined. Wondering if that’s what they’ll use to lift the real ones in.

i was wondering the same thing. it seems that it even has lifting magnets for ease of use
@knowledgeisgood9645Күн бұрын
There is no reason to assume anything is different from the 'real thing'. Those simulators need to use the same mechanisms as the satellites will to just act in the same way. I am sure they have the same weight and dimensions too.

I was hoping those wooden pieces were part of it. PineSat FTW. 🌲

It's so insane these guys are just shoving some metal framework into a rack of a metal can, on another day of work, but in reality, they are loading a payload going to space on the most powerful rocket every created and that metal will go to space to revolutionize the future. The level of sci-fi level crap SpaceX does is just crazy!

These don't look like the Starlinks we saw being trucked in yesterday into the factory. These look like corrugated metal with stringers holding them together.
@jgrvolcano1614Күн бұрын
could they be the separators between the simulated satellites?
@CATDRL2Күн бұрын
@@jgrvolcano1614 That would represent added useless weight. They are already trying to reduce weight to add payload.
@knowledgeisgood9645Күн бұрын
Those are just Starlink simulators. They only need to be the same dimensions and weight, and use the same mechanisms to glide in and out and the same latches to lock in inside the dispenser.
