Yes! That's the card I never noticed until I got the Duel Decks Anthology to play with my wife, which got me back into Magic in 2015. Then I understood that it's actually a Goblin Ringleader sans haste, yet with Trample, which is also quite relevant.

If you play with fallen empires, you could add spore cloud. It's a little expensive, but it's a fog for 2 turns.

12:00 so there's the condition in pre-modern (or OG magic I guess), where making your opponent skip their attack step is better than preventing combat damage: Erg Raiders 😂 Not that Turbo Fog is all that excited by 2 damage to face being added to... up to 4 of its cards.
@mtgphil42
@mtgphil42 2 күн бұрын
That's true :) It's not a strictly better card, just in 99.5% of cases. :) I think that if we imagine that our opponent has a whole playset of Erg Raiders before we start casting Festivals and also takes 4 damage early in the game from Cities of Brass, that would be a remarkable victory.

I agree with the Millstones not being all that necessary. If they have a place somewhere, maybe a couple copies in the sideboard, for specific matchups. And, on the topic of matchups, the slots you'd free up by moving the Millstones to the sideboard could probably go to an Ivory Tower (for non-combat damage matchups), and a couple Disenchants (for the matchups that don't care about combat at all like The Deck or Stasis). That said, I really like your list, I think you've got a good build going on here, with a solid amount of fog-effects to consistently get the "lock" going, but not too much that they start eating up the slots for the power cards. All in all, good deck and good video.
@mtgphil42
@mtgphil42 2 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for the feedback! I always tend to underestimate and even ignore Ivory Tower because, just like most players, I got excited for it first when started playing, but then realized that "life is a resource". As for matchups, Ivory Tower will 100% defeat non-combat damage strategies, Disenchants and some other stuff in the four colors that we have will be very useful!

I've always loved turbo fog, and wanted to build it in old school. Any thought to a 1-of Island Sanctuary over a Millstone? It still ensures our opponent mills before us, and has some utility as a fog, though I suppose many good threats have flying. I always thought Ivory Tower has a nice place in this deck to beat Lightning Bolts, too. In any case, thanks for the great content.
@mtgphil42
@mtgphil42 5 күн бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate it! Island Sanctuary is a card I like a lot - it's often seen as a "poor man's Moat", but it's cheaper and has that little advantage you have mentioned. The problem is that this deck is often on a brink of not having enough "Fog" cards, especially if Howling Mines get destroyed or your opponent has a lot of disruption / counter magic, so skipping even one draw later in the game can be fatal. Also, the problem with Island Sanctuary is that it doesn't stop fliers, and since we solely rely on Fog to stop attacks, by the end of the game our opponent will often have Serra's, Hippies and Serendibs coming our way... I thought of other defense mechanisms like Mazes, Moats, even Horn of Deafening! :) But they all seem redundant since there aren't any slots for them.
@Gifts42
@Gifts42 5 күн бұрын
@@mtgphil42 Yeah I don't really know the old school meta, but I imagine most decks that look to attack use fliers, and with all the howling mines they'll definitely draw those threats. Great content still, thanks
@mtgphil42
@mtgphil42 5 күн бұрын
@@Gifts42 You're right!.. Old School meta is very small, the whole cardpool is just several hundred cards, and playables constitute a couple hundred cards at best... Also, it's very easy to make a multicolored deck, so beyond the restricted cards that are automatically included in most competitive decks, there isn't much variety, sadly. That's why I often like to focus on casual and fun archetypes.

More than 99% of decks in Magic, including Old School, use damage as its main win condition. But what about the second most popular wincon - milling your opponent's deck? Here is my take on TurboFog, which, as the name presumes, uses Fog to stop the opponents. And it's not just the OG Green Fog, there's also Black and 2 White variations of that pacifist card! However, that's still not enough to guarantee that we can nullify each of our opponent's attacks. So that's where the Turbo part comes in, with Howling Mines, to ensure that we get a Fog every turn! Paired with Millstone, solid draw spells and some counter magic, this deck can does have chances of milling our opponent's deck pretty fast!

Interesting take on the enchantress build. Im also going green / black, but cheap CC agro. I never thought that neither wonderlust nor warp artifact would be any good. How do you like them?
@mtgphil42
@mtgphil42 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! You're right, that would be more optimal, of course, especially because Enchantress will stop being a removal magnet. I just really wanted to force that "curse" aspect, especially because you can easily do that with Arboria. 2-3 non-combat damage per turn is nothing to sneeze at, and since there are not so many ways to destroy enchantments (many decks and colors don't even have them pre-sideboard), it's almost inevitable. So I liked them a lot, also because of how well they feel to play. Underworld Dreams is the best from that cycle, but we all know that.

The last One i built was a mono green elves deck to make it more Simple to my girlfriend to understand the interactions inside the green Collor, so the idea is to ramp faster, get as much elves as possible INTO the Battlefield, win life using the number of elves in play and for example use voice of the Woods and tap 5 elves to put a 7/7 green elemental with trample on play, and as a surprise use natural affinity to surprise, i like to cycle gempalm strider to get all my elves +2/+2 and make a surprise powerfull attack, this are some of the cheap cards i ve been able to colect in the past few months.( Sorry if my English was not easy to understand) i love mono white decks, but this Next time i think i am going to build a blue and red deck, were i can use curiosity or unstable mutation to enchant metathran elite and make it unblockable and also use Howlin mine and some blue cards i have to draw more cards and i was thinking in words of war to pay 1 everytime a draw a second card each turn and instead give 2 damage to any target, bit it is still an invention in my head to use some of the cards i already own. Thx for teaching me more about old school MTG. I hope you had fun here on Portugal and Next time if you can explore the south near the ocean its completou different experience and the people and places around out south coast are amazing. Red Elemental Blast and Blue Elemental Blast are quite the staples in Old School Magic 93-94 - destroying a permanent at instant speed or countering a spell for only 1 mana is definitely a good deal! They are solid cards for sideboard and can even see some main deck play. However, there is no guarantee that your opponent will play Red (they will most likely play Blue, but perhaps only as a splash color), so what do we do? Paint! Use the Alpha rares that nobody wants to open in a pack - Chaoslace and Thoughtlace (as well as Dwarven Song and Sea King's Blessing) to paint the spells and permanents blue and red and then blast them! Another strategy here is to use Sleight of Mind to make our Beasts of Bogardan, Spinal Villain and even Elder Spawn more relevant!

After playing out 5 or 6 lands, would it be better to just hold the rest of them to help power your Psychatog? At one point I was seeing about 11 lands on the table and room for 6 of them in your hand; that would be like an extra 9 power and toughness plus the opponent might think they still need to overcome a full grip of counters and removal.

So for rarity, several factors are in play that will make a card "rare". And I'm talking ABU mostly because as time goes on, people change in WOTC and they may change the design philosophy. 1) What is it? (Creature, Spell, Land, Artifact) 2) How often is it encountered? Power is not necessarily a consideration. Fireball can be very powerful but it is a common. For example, we all know the color pie and what each color does. If a card does something that is totally color pie, it is often a common. If the card does something in color pie but also in an allied color, it is uncommon. If the card does something of an opposite color, it is a rare. There is also a food chain philosophy for creatures. A commonly found creature that is designed for just within the color is a common. You can have a 1 mana Llanowar Elves that taps for G. But you can also have a Craw Wurm 6/4 for 6 mana. Both are normal green creatures despite one being much bigger than the other. But then Birds Of Paradise is also 1 mana that taps for one mana but it's rare because it also can tap for opposing colors of mana, not just same color green. Then you have Thicket Basilisk, smaller than Craw Wurm but is Uncommon because it has Deathtouch (It should be rare but at the time, they hadn't figured out what color DT belonged to...I think it's black but don't quote.), a special ability where Wurm is just a big dumb green creature. Then compare Cockatrice to Thicket Basilisk. Why is Cockatrice a rare? It's because it has Flying, normally a blue ability, along with Deathtouch. Thicket Basilisk is more useful but the Cockatrice is weirder. Force Of Nature having Trample is normal, being 8/8 makes it uncommon but dealing damage to it's owner (or breaking owner's permanents, sacrifice, etc.) is a black characteristic, like Lord Of The Pit, so it's rare. Another condition is also there for artifacts and lands. Both are similar as the weirder the card, the rarer it is. If the artifact grants pure color ability to any target like Helm Of Chatzuk, then it is rare. If it works within one color, it is uncommon, like Iron Star. Sol Ring and Basalt Monolith generate only colorless so they are uncommon. Black Lotus and Moxen generate colored mana AND cost 0 mana so they are rare. Mana Vault damages you like a black card so it is rare. Last thing to consider is some abilities are exclusive to a color while other abilities are usually in a color but can mildly be shared with allied colors. Flying is mainly a blue ability and any power and toughness. Blue's allies white and black can have flyers but they are like 1/1 (common like Mesa Pegasus), 2/2 (uncommon like Hypnotic Specter), etc. If any other non-allied color card has Flying, like Cockatrice and Shivan Dragon, they will for sure be at least uncommon and if it's a big body, then rare.
