I bought a brand new1975 5 hp british seagull, ran it for as many years that it took to save for a real outboard motor. Apparently some "sportsmen" love these smokey beasts...spark plugs foul quickly due to the high oil to fuel ratio - and embarassing oil slick at the dock from the poor seals on the lower unit. Dont try refilling the fuel tank out on the water, usually spills over because of the shape. Great for a 10 minute run on a skim board, Poor for a sailboat aux. No shear pin on the prop just this ridiculuous over complicated spring thing, Even in its time, better junk had been invented (like the recoil starter). Here in the states small 2 strokes are in demand if you can still find them...but Seagull motors are just too far over the "pollution threshold" for any outdoorsman with a conscience. I like my 1991 22 lb. 2 hp., 2 stroke yamaha (sold under various labels) Still not tier4 but much cleaner than a seagull

Hi Pete, I have a 1980, 75 series. Has a recoil start like yours. Revs sound about the same as yours, but you are getting a lot more speed. Have you modified the engine, repitched the propellor ? We have an annual Seagull race in far North Queensland and I would really like to be more competitive. Looking for ideas.

My motor is a 5R model. The mini max was one of the lighter boats I could build ( and I built it with 4mm ply instead of 6 mm and strategically reinforced it with glass sheathing) The guys n Bermuda build long thin boats. I have a bateaux 14 foot skiff but it is filled with foam and is too heavy. So it does plane, but at a sedate 7 knots. Light people in folding boats go very good = really light boat of some sort could help? Good luck on your quest. PS when I a kid (power to weight) a tinny would plane … but tinnies are not the easy answer.

you are the reason that there are now four seagulls in my possession - I loved the first video you did. What is the boat you are in again? I am thinking of a build over our northern hemisphere winter.
@petenotman9909 Жыл бұрын
Cheers. It is a minimax from Svensens plans: www.svensons.com/boat/?p=HydroPlanes/minimax It is a heap of fun, but pig roots buckets of water into your face at times in choppy conditions and with not a lot of free board, you will be wanting to forego the "Lighten-ing holes" for buoyancy tanks. Great on flat water, but an old critter can kneel on it for only so long 😀
@petenotman9909 Жыл бұрын
Ahhh …. The external keel makes the prop cavitate, so you’d want to taper that off well before the stern. Water comes over the bow and into the cockpit, hence the raised coaming and sides. Plus I have two cockpit drains - bicycle tubes over glued in stainless steel pipe: water comes in, water goes out (as long as you are moving)

@petenotman99093 жыл бұрын
It weighs a tonne. I have progressively modified my trailer with more and more rollers and now a winch! After I finish painting it, the plan is to remove about half the foam to make it lighter. Car topping could be possible. But not recommended.

@petenotman99093 жыл бұрын
I got mine from Bateau, but it looks like they might have sold out to www.boatbuildercentral.com/product/solo-flats-skiff-boat-plans-sk14/ only comment is that it is a bit heavy with the reinforcing foam, I will probably take out the mid section foam [but only if you reinforce glass tape those bits] also the central transom single crescent cut out sprays water coming off the outboard skeg back into the boat ... so I would opt for two off set half "d's" either side. Good luck.

Why would you fill it with foam. Just gonna get bogged down and soaked with water
@petenotman99094 жыл бұрын
The foam is supposed to give it strength, but I am on a mission to pull out at least half of my foam ... because the boat weighs a tonne and I had to drill breather holes off the bat because the deck was threatening to blow up. If you go no foam, reinforce the inside (inside fillets, tape and glass)

I would like to know the horsepower of the British Seagal outboard used on the Mini Max? Thank you from the US
@petenotman99094 жыл бұрын
It is a 5 hp '5R' model. The regular seagull models boast 4 1/2 horsepower, but that is not at the prop ... probably more like 2 1/2 hp. I honestly believe my 5R stock standard would be close to 5 hp at the prop.
@saltwater524 жыл бұрын
Thank you Pete, it really pushed that Minimax along quite well. Occasionally I see one here in the US in Florida usually on the back of a sailboat. I was wondering how they hold up in saltwater?

SCRUTINEERING . Do you have to registered in NZ? Seems like a sweet skiff. Is there a plan to purchase ?
@petenotman99095 жыл бұрын
Nope - in New Zealand, amateur boats don't have to be registered [unless they are a jet ski]. They are supposed to have a name on them for identification (more for search and rescue rather than compliance issues, but if you are a loon, indentification will help you get your just deserts). I got the plans from Bateaux boats bateau.com/studyplans/SK14_study.php?prod=SK14 good luck. I haven't been out in my boat enough lately due to work life balance and foul weather. But I have put rollers on the trailer which should make it much easier to launch and retrieve ... so as soon as I get a moment to myself ... there will be another movie soon

@@petenotman9909 Ordinarily I'd agree that adding music detracts and let the video speak for itself. However, in this instance your looping was brilliant and worth infringing the petty ownership of sounds.

@petenotman99095 жыл бұрын
I haven't actually weighed it, but I reckon it would be very close to design weight (127 lbs/50 kg). It has a bit of a 'heft' and lately I have been up-grading my trailer with rollers and a winch to facilitate launching. Definitely a trailer boat and not a roof topper.

5 hp on the prop .. I would just about believe that. Wide angle lens and being so close to the water gives the go kart effect of hyper space, but 16 knots in fresh water and about 20 in saltwater .... which begs the question, that I need to do some prop tweaking?

Bit of a fun boat. You want pretty calm weather, but it would be easy to launch and a mission to Kapiti is on the agenda this summer. Not a lot of freeboard and not entirely stable, so probably not every bodies cup of tea .... but I like it alot.

@@petenotman9909 I'm a spearo so don't mind getting wet :D Did you cut the sheets yourself or do you know someone with a cnc machine? If you don't mind me asking +- how much did it cost you to build? My quick estimate is about $600. I'd love to come and see it some time if you don't mind.
@petenotman99096 жыл бұрын
I scribed the shapes with a wonky batten and a pencil. I cut the sheets with a jig saw. There is a blog: sites.google.com/site/piratepeteshomepage/piratepetester-builds-a-bateau-sk14 Material cost was about $1200 - $1500 (I never kept actual count) for the hull. I had the motor lying around and the trailer ... but I am seriously thinking of upgrading the trailer with a new one = the sky could be the limit. My only regret was filling it full of foam. I reckon with some serious fibreglass reinforcing on the inside it would be plenty strong enough without the foam. Sure it could theoretically sink, but light and strong is a good mantra to work towards.

Also where did you get the kayak? Love the idea of pedal kayaks might have to sell mine and upgrade!!
@petenotman99096 жыл бұрын
It is a Hobie Compass, from NZ Watershed in Auckland. $300 freight just to get it down here. I like it, but even though I let Sam use it yesterday (to allow his broken hand to recover) he refused to use the pedal drive, paddled all the way and complained that it was slower than a wet week (compared to what he was used to)
@isaacisaako25736 жыл бұрын
Cos he's soft!!! Haha nah fair enough, from what I've been reading though the pedal ones are generally shorter and wider?? So that of course would be slower to paddle by hand
@petenotman99096 жыл бұрын
You can actually paddle it faster than the drives, and you get 'bracing stability' - pedaling is ideal comfortable trolling speed with the ability to 'game boat play' the fish when you catch one. I'd definitely have the paddle out for coming back to shore through the surf
