how did you set the dimensions of the board? You just said "simple enough" and it sounded like you typed something but you didn't say what you did!
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 5 ай бұрын
Adding dimensions in SketchUp is 'simple enough'. After using any of the tools just type in numbers for the dimension you want BEFORE touching anything else on your keyboard or in the model. If this doesn't help you can add a timestamp in a reply to this comment and I'll try to guide you through. It really IS easy but I too got super frustrated with this predicament early on! 😎

@@NextLevelCarpentry awesome thanks I figured it out but I can't for the life of me figure out how to copy an object a certain distance
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 5 ай бұрын
@@Numenor7 Ok; Select the object you want to copy & move. Select the move tool and then hit Ctrl (on PC) then drag it in the direction you want it to move (hint: it's best to move it along one of the 3 axis: red, green or blue). Click once then, using numbers, simply type in the desired distance and click enter. Done properly the object will jump to that dimension/location regardless if you initially moved it more or less distance than you want it to go. Hope this helps? FYI I did a 3-part series on Digital Jobsite covering an Apprentice Sawhorse Build that is my best effort for an introduction to SketchUp for carpenters. It covers this function plus a lot more that you'll encounter on your learning curve. Best, Matt

The 3D model see in this video was done with SketchUp Make 2017 (free) which is no longer available. The current version is SketchUp Pro which is subscription based at a cost that's not justified for recreational use like SketchUp was in the olden days. There's a 'free' browser version but I find it cludgy to use... but that's just me.

Great video but Im still having problems. I exploded my over-length jack rafters, made them a group, then edited the group and starting on the first jack rafter drew a line top and bottom to "cut" them from the diagonal rafter. But when I go to move and copy the lines to the two remaining sides, they stick to the rafter and stretch. Tried many times, what am I doing wrong?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry Жыл бұрын
My guess is that you're not moving the 'copy' but the original lines. Make sure the copied line stay 'blue'. Any time you click away and the lines turn back to black, they become part of the existing geometry and will 'stick' as they are for you. I know it's annoying but pay VERY close attention to your keystroke sequence until it becomes second nature. If it's any comfort I can tell you it took me a long time to understand the different keystrokes and sequences so hang in there and you'll 'get it' soon!

I love the stool and found the link back to this video which I watched with great pleasure. I know AutoCad, Solidworks and have self taught bits and pieces of Sketchup 17.2 which I think is the last free version. You have demonstrated many techniques I was not familiar with and I appreciate you going the extra step on not only applying material but doing so such that it looks realistic. You are a great and efficient master level carpenter and an awesome digital designer too. Somehow I missed that you had this channel but so glad I found it. Have a happy and blessed new year Matt!

My boards are not push pulling like yours when I do a line or rectangle why would that be. If it is a component would that make a difference ?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry Жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon, Make sure that you're in "Component Edit" mode (same goes for Groups) and select an individual face to use the push/pull tool. That's because the tool can only work on a single face. When you initially create a 'board', the geometry isn't contained in a Component or Group 'box' so you can manipulate individual faces. Once you contain the whole 'board' within a Component or Group, you have to double click to get 'inside' the entity to manipulate it as 'raw' geometry again. See if that helps... I'm betting your hunch is right.😎

this program is absolutely not user friendly. So difficult just to move things around and rotate them, wasted an hour trying to figure out how to manipulate a single 2x4 and I still cannot get it right 90% of the time... waste of time.
