@@s16100 thank you! I'm learning, certainly not flawless, but I really don't have that much seat time. Too much or too little coal is a very fine balance, I have not lost any fires yet but I need to hone that art in a little more.
@s16100Күн бұрын
@@mattkinnard6899 Yeah, the smaller the firebox, the more tedious it is for finding that fine line on amount of fuel. No one is perfect, don't be too hard on yourself. Every boiler is different in how it fires etc. I am willing to bet by the end of that run you were better at it than in the beginning. I only saw you lift the safety once. And only saw her kind of run away a little down grade once..............and I really can't talk. Been there done that on the 58! LOL Learning the railroad and the engine are both required and still, the railroad will throw you a curve ball now and then to make sure your not too comfortable. Once on the 765 I darn near lost the fire completely. Had it banked up in Owasso Mi. Engineer had to turn her on the table, asked if I was ready, I said yep, and as he pulled on the throttle I watched the steam pressure drop and the fire turn dark and went into full panic mode shoveling like crazy. :)

@@s16100 I need to get up and see the 58 yet! A beneficial part of the videos is that it lets me review my 'work' outside the beat of the moment. From there I observe and adjust!
@s1610020 сағат бұрын
@@mattkinnard6899 yeah, I actually wished you would have had that camera on your head for part of it, to show the fire, the water level, the coal and working the controls. it was a cool view from the engineers side, but a cab view would have been cool to. You could more easily review your work that way as you watched the steam pressure etc. :)

Consider adding a pressure regulator under the cars with air brakes and adjust the pressure for when unloaded and loaded. Just need to place the valve where it can be easily accessed (near coupler). Adjust the pressure on each car based on usage/load when in use. It'll save on wheel and track wear.

You will not like it when it operates on Battery's. Trolly power would be more practable then battery. That would require overhead lines and I would stick to what you have. Ask me how I know.

This is the second summer going on battery. It's quiet and pulls 2,000 pounds up 3.5% all day long. The control is super smooth for jerk free starts and stops, and is a candidate for a custom wireless system to make switching solo a breeze. The sound system makes is sound accurate, and the ability to play music on it is wonderful to make hours of track work sessions tick by faster. To each their own, gas power has its place, but I can't imagine going back.

They initially shipped the oil to Oil City by pumping the oil into Oil Creek, then in Oil City they would skim the oil off. That worked for a while, until the creek caught fire. (Yes, I know, that's a lot of oils).

Couplers wear out and can fail just like only other moving part. If a knuckle pin had not seated properly a good jolt from slack action could make it pop open.

Do all these cars have air brakes? Do they work like the real thing, or is it “straight air” to keep things simple? Looked like they stopped pretty quickly, im curious to know how it’s done in miniature!

You did an amazing work and paint. Thanks for your shearing. The good point with all these critters, Davenport, Porter, GE, Brockville, Plymouth, Vulcan etc is that they made so many variations, with not too many look alike that as long as it´s plausible, you´re fine. Plus customers changes after decades of service. Fiberglass or steel body ? Harsh question. I prefer dent and bump with steel than fiberglass´s cracks. But the latter is easily repaired. Curves are the nightmare. Even if perfect radius isn´t attain, it must be the same on both faces. I too think about the pipe trick. Too thin is fragile and unweldable. Too thick, good luck for bending. Short pieces can be heated with torch for those that own one. But long pieces means failures. Welding together many small ones to make a big one ? An other hassle. I plan an Alco RS3. At more than 8 feet long, it´s a lot of hood and nose large radius curvature. The worst being the four hood corners where sides meet top panel and match with the front one. Sort of basketball shape. May be do and weld everything together, cut a perfect hole in the center (good luck to find it) add the perfect corner match...4 times then cab curves are different too. To add some spices to that nightmare, don´t know no one making AAR B trucks. Or cheat with Blomberg... Type of project good to keep me busy for a decade and to send me in some asylum... 😢😮😅😊
