I nanage to take the plate of from the bottom. I just remove the starter motor and use extraction wit 8 mm socket. It's take me about un hour. I'm not sure how to clean the clans on the head side. The plate is easy enough, but this little holes on the head looks proper blocked to and I'm not sure how to clean them properly!

Bij mij ga ik de remlichtschakelaar vervangen. Dat is een dubbelpolige, voor de remlichten en het aanslaan of starten van de motor. En was ook de uitkomst van het uitleesapparaat, je pomp geeft geen brandstofdruk dan. Toevallig met mijn schoen de schakelaar geraakt en toen startte de auto wel. Eventueel kan er nog een schakelaar zitten die werkt op ingetrapt koppelingspedaal Success.

Hi Ronnie, No I didn't remove the valve cover. I removed the inlet manifold with the valve cover still in place. You could remove the valve cover to make access to the inlet manifold easier however with the valve cover off you would risk dirt getting into the engine.

Hi Nigel! I've just removed the inlet manifold enough to get my hands in to unbolt the plate. Successfully got it out, found to be blocked solid. Spent an hour scraping and cleaning it out aswell as the gasket. My question is....what did you do regarding the engine part of it....i mean if the plate was clogged solid would the corresponding holes in the head be blocked too that they would need all cleaning aswell? My engine is in the car still and the inlet manifold is pushed to one side so cant get in there to see.....what did you do...if anything to the engine side of this? Any help welcomed

Hi mate I too have had issues with my zafira same engine as yours and I to stumbled on the information online about cleaning the egr channels I was going to take manifold off anyway to give it a clean so will go abit further and clean these channels aswell I've had 3 egr valves go wrong and this may be the cause so thanks again for your videos I'm also replacing the rocker cover as pcv valve seems to be faulty and cleaning the egr valve 1 question What gasket did you get as can't seem to find one the channel gasket as have ordered the manifold gasket or can you reuse old egr gasket any pointers would be great thank you

Here is a link to the gasket I purchased for the EGR plate. They don't have any in stock at the moment. Thanks for sharing this. After cleaning the EGR channel and reassembling the car I now have a problem on start up - it revs to about 3000rpm, settles to 1000rpm then shuts down. I am thinking that cleaning the channels has upset the fuel management system somehow? Did you have an issue after putting your car back together?

I would guess that something has not been re-assembled correctly. I would get a code reader and read the error codes being reported by the ECU to help you find the issue. You could also go over your steps and check all parts have been reconnected correctly.

Jack your car up and take a look from underneath. You will see that the bottom of the intake manifold is held on by a bracket and 1 bolt, undo this bolt and your manifold will be free, you can then remove it from the car. The bracket is there to support the manifold and stop it from moving/rattling around. You have done well to get this far, your almost there, keep going!

Yes I would change the gasket for a new one. New gaskets are very cheap and will ensure that you have a good seal between the EGR channel plate and the cylinder head.

Hi Ashley, a P0171 code on a 2007 Zafira 1.6 it's highly likely caused by a blocked EGR valve or blocked EGR channels on the EGR plate like in my video. The juddering at slow speeds makes me 99% sure it's blocked EGR channels on the EGR plate (my car juddered at slow speeds also until I cleaned the channels). I would have your EGR valve cleaned or replaced along with having the EGR channels in the plate cleaned.

@@Ash281. I didn't have a rough idle from what I can remember but from what I have read on the Vauxhall forums this can happen if the EGR channels are very blocked up. If the blockage is extreme then the car can even begin misfiring so it all depends on what stage the blockage is at. What is the milege on your Zafira?

Hi Kim, Yes absolutely. If your EGR plate is blocked then your engine will run poorly and your car will show the P0171 error code. I received the same P0171 code you received, once I cleaned the exhaust soot from my EGR plate the error code cleared and the car drives much better. @@kimshannon9484 That's very poor service from the garage but to be honest I'm not surprised, I know it's not easy but I would try and find a better garage, I find that smaller garages are better and are more prepared to actually find the cause/source of the problem. I replaced 2 gaskets, the inlet manifold gasket and the EGR channel plate gasket, not very expensive (approx £15 for both).

Yes this fixed my issue, the car drives perfectly now. If you have the P0171 code on a 1.6 Zafira B petrol engine there is a high probability that this is your issue. What milege do you have on your car?

I bought a Zaffy with the same engine with 50,000 miles on the clock with blocked channels. Most people ignore it because it will pass emission test. So the likelihood is it has been blocked for a long time.

Hi Andreas, The inlet manifold needs to be removed first, I did this from the top, it might be possible to do it from the bottom also. Once the inlet manifold is removed you will see the EGR plate, it sits just under the 4 inlet/intake ports on the cylinder head. It's not an easy job but not a hard one either, it just takes some time. I completed the job over two weekends, so 4 days in total, i'm not a mechanic but i'm competent with tools and cars. As for guidance please see the two links in the description of this video named "Link to more help on this issue" and "How to remove inlet manifold". Hope you manage to get your problem fixed.

I've had no codes related to egr problems but recently but I've had an oil leak from rocker for about a month that's fixed but my symptoms and no response low down/at all rarely and car can only revv above 5k when there's no load (not in gear) feels like a blocked exhaust to me that's the only way I can describe it, has barely any power above 3k rpm either, these sound like similar symptoms? Recent oil leak leads me to believe blocked channels, 91k miles so fingers crossed this sorts my problem if not it should help in some way I'm hoping

Hi Thomas, If you have no codes that are commonly related to egr issues on this engine type then hopefully the issue I had is not the same issue you have as it's not a easy/quick fix. Is your car reporting back any codes at all when using a obd2 scanner? If it is I would run a google search to see if anyone on the Vauxhall forums has the same codes and symptoms you have, hopefully they will provide a solution to your problem.

Hi Jason, with the symptoms you are experiencing and the mileage of your car it's totally possible that somewhere in your egr system there is a blockage be it in the egr valve itself or like in the egr channels in my video. Have you had your car scanned for ecu codes? If you have a P0171 code then this further confirms it could be blocked egr channels. The job had taken me two weekends to complete, I was taking my time and taking notes and pictures of everything I disconnected so I could re-fit everything back as it was. I'm not a mechanic but I'm competent with cars and tools, it was a big job for me but I managed to do it successfully so I'm sure you could do it also. A good mechanic could have the job done in a day.

The problem with this car is the same problem with Peugeot’s. If you bypass the immobiler, it will work until it stops working. All you need to do is to Turn the key to the on position don’t start it, hold the lock or unlock button on the key then turn it back one step and then back to the on position and start it. The light will go away. Stop bypassing the immobilizer system.

I had tried the method you mentioned as it was recommended to me by the guys on the Cliosport forum however it did not work for my issue. When you turn the ignition on the ECU will do certain checks, as I had a break in the wiring loom the ECU could not communicate with the sensor at the other end of the wire break, therefore the ECU check failed, the ECU will then stop the car from being started via the immobilizer i'm assuming. The issue was I was unable to bypass the immobiliser using the method you mentioned. Once the break in the wiring loom was fixed the car fired up again without issue.

For all with this kind of problem, RED LIGHT ON PERMANENT (NOT FLASHING!!!) ... it`s not an immo problem, it`s not a crank shaft sensor problem, it`s most likely the wiring loom or the connection between the ECU and the UHC (transponder) ... i have a 2005 Renault Kangoo Express Series I - i did the immo bypass when the red light started flashing (it means he doesn't recognise the key anymore), the car worked fine for 2 years almost, never had a problem with the start ... until 1 month ago when i had this exact same problem - RED LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON after you turn the key in the second position - 100% of the times the car doesn't start. The moment the Red Light Sensor is off the car will start 100% of the time ... as my model is quite old the computer doesn`t block the ignition and i can hear the alternator turning as it fails to start ... so it MUST be a problem with electrical wiring. Also, the moments when the RED LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON are completely random. Once the engine starts, if you don't stop it it will work completely normal, and it may also start 10 times more with no problem but then, completely random the RED LIGHT STAYS ON and the start is blocked for some reason. By the Way, as i wrote this the car is in the alley with the same problem. Still not fixed, need to check all the wires and connectors. Don`t go to the garage with such problem if you don`t want to pay half of the car`s price for the fix. PS - it`s not the start relay also ... there is a cubical relay under the hood, next to 2-3 more that are bigger in size (depends on the model) , some may suggest to change that with a new one. Did that, 50 euro for a small relay and nothing changed.

Hi Kane, this may work for others having starting issues so thanks for the advice, it may help someone. In my case I had tried this method and it did not work for me, I had a break in the wiring loom, the ecu recognised the issue and prevents you from starting the car until the break in the wiring loom was fixed. The ecu will not be happy if it can not communicate with components and sensors due to wiring loom breaks or corrosion. This is what I learned after months of pain.

andrew russell check your wiring loom cables for breaks and splits. If you can't do this yourself have a car mechanic or garage do it for you. That was the fix for my car in this video.

I sold the car to a friend who is a mechanic and he found the problem!!! Two wires from the wiring loom had split (white & purple), the wires sit above the gearbox but are covered by the black plastic wiring loom cover. Once he had reconnected the broken wires the car fired up into life. Check your wiring loom's people! Not an easy or tidy job but that was the solution here.

Nice one. I had the same problem and it was a corroded wire, in my case following one of the red wires from the 5v fuse next to the battery. Look for disturbed wires and/or any breaks in the outer sheath where the wire underneath is no longer protected from the elements - corroded wires tend to go a bit green and even powdery. Removing the fuse box from the chassis will give you easiest access to check the most likely place for breaks, and if no luck then it’s time to start checking wires that run over the gearbox and elsewhere. Not much fun in the wet and cold when corrosion is most likely to occur.

Crankcase sensor is worth checking. I had the same issue. Take it out and clean it, if that does not work replace it it's only a cheap part. It is situated on the engine on the passengers side!!!!

Got the fix for this but no idea why it does it because my 172 does the same. Key in to position 1, hold down the fob button and turn to position 2, let go off the fob button and turn it back to position 1, turn to position 2 (the light should go off) and it should start. It something to do with the control unit for the immobiliser (I think) sometimes wiggling the wires under the passenger seat sorts it as well. Not sure it's a problem with the key especially if if the fob works. My fob does not work (loose solder on the circuit board) but also have other electrical issues, central locking does not work, rear indicator some times works, abs and airbag light flashes under hard acceleration (but only sometimes)

That will be an earthing issue as someone said below (had this as well) the most likely place for this is 1 of the rear light clusters. Start with the rear drivers side. Take the rear light unit off and discount the power block thing from the light. Look inside the male and female parts of the plug and make sure it is not rusty (the last pin on mine was really bad) get some sand paper and remove any rust. Check both sides. If that does not work there are a bunch of wires under the passenger seat make sure they are all connected and not damaged (give them a wiggle - yes that technical )

The common problems on this car is the imobillizer.The ecu unit doesn't recognize the key(Cip Reading)..all you can do and cheaper and faster to fix it...call the van mecanic were for 75 pound will copy the key and will work 100%..i've done mine..ECU UNIT ITS TRANSMITING THE SIGNAL TO START..AND WILL NOT START BCS OF THE RED LIGHTS IS ON.HOPE MY POST WILL HELP!

In this car there is no battery in key. It's oldschool peace of metal. Battery is only in remote for door lock, but have nothing to do with engine startup procedure.

recently car was in crash nothing major just body work but driver seat airbag went off so iv put a seat from a 5 door clio into my 3 door clio .... and i have a knew airbag ecu module to be fitted but have not fitted it yet ... with the knew seat i still have airbag light and serv light come on ..... but what my problem is my car wont start before i had no problems i go to turn the key into second position and the immobiliser light stays steady red so when i bypass that and make it go if i go try again it just does it again aswell as clock reset and dash board read out mpg and how many miles since last reset but if i attach jump leads and bypass the immobiliser it starts first time and if the engine cuts out i am able to start the car from the ignition its only when i leave it over night and go try and start it does immobiliser stay red again and i have to bypass and reset clock

nope. it`s not a immo issue ... i have this problem for a month on my renault kangoo express , with bypass immo procedure done, it starts completely random and 100% when the red light is ON it doesn't start . Went to 3 different garages and no one could fix it. As i type this the car is in the back yard doing the same thing.

Its your CPS ( Crankshaft Position Sensor), there is a TSB on it, new sensor will come with a new plug. Easy to fix

nope. checked that also. The start is completely random and the cars starts 100% when the red light is NOT ON , and can`t start 100% if the red light is ON like in the vid. I tryed, new battery, crank shaft pos sensor, start plugs that were old, immo is bypassed can use any key to start ... but the car doesn't start with the red light ON.
