UK really needs to focus on reserves for the future. Most people are unwilling to be a regular because a multitude of reasons such as more pay in civi and more freedom, which results in our very low number of regulars. If a major war were to break out our regulars would quickly become irrelevant and the focus would be on conscripts instead. But if we created good incentive for reserves we could have a country that has a major force readily trained in a time of need. Regulars are great for mostly peace time and small wars in Afghan, but in a world wide event we need more. Imagine looking at the UK and thinking 1/5 of that population is readily trained. Create real incentive and reward for reserves to give up weekends, long time rewards and youll have it. Pensions, grants for businesses, free uni tuition etc. It could be done.

Excellent stuff and I bet that audience loved it. RN/ SCC rifle drill in blues and white anklets looks the biz. Just a shame PP rifles, Guard drill and shooting almost totally disappeared from SCC units. It was so much better years ago. Just knots, blocks n tackle and First aid don't do much to attract or retain teenagers I'm afraid.

Ex air cadet here I was in 7.5 yrs and had the time and the experiences I accomplished in my was amazing, gliding was my best and I managed go solo in a glider at 16 on a week course. atc all the way for anyone wanting to know.
