Great Post! My experience of chalkstreams is very limited (wrong end of the country!) so I find the water clarity a little daunting compared with my more familiar peaty, brawling streams! Good to know that pockets of free fishing like this still exist on iconic waters such as the Itchen. It's the opposite situation here, we've lots of recovering rivers with good improving stocks of wild trout and few fishing clubs taking advantage of the potential! All about carp.... Take care!

@@robmegginson2916 thank you 😊 Warsash is tricky, it’s close for me so I have fished there a fair bit. I often find I’ll turn up and it doesn’t seem like much is going on and other days there’s a few fish about. It’s a good venue but definitely not an easy one. Focus on areas with structure, there’s plenty there where the water enters the salt marshes and once you’ve covered a spot move on if nothing going on, keep trying as it’s just a matter of time and conditions/ tide aligning. About a size 8 medium shank. Doesn't always work but nice when it does! I've a small river a walk away from home with a good head of mostly small brownies, but there's a modest run of sea trout every summer. Gurgler is the best way to fish it at night in low water conditions as you just end up getting snagged on river bed debris with a sinking lure, unless there's a good flow, in which case there's some colour and it won't fish at night. I tried to do a couple of videos at night but I didn't really work 😂 Sub much appreciated!

@@seanfitzpatrick3227 thanks mate 👍 Lewis’ fish, the 3 I lost and the bass all took a red flexi worm. There are a whole range of flies that will work though, most of them created by Colin Macleod. I’m in no way affiliated with them, but if you google Selectafly, their website sells a good range of mullet flies. The only thing I would say is that if you are confident tying your own it’s worth it as you can use stronger hooks. I was advised to use PTFE coated carp hooks as they stay sharper and resist saltwater corrosion thanks to the coating. Once I’ve had a bit more success with the mullet I’ll probably do a video on rods, leaders and flies etc. 👍

Was Lewis letting the flies drift that made the difference? Also, can you show the set up of the indicator, leader set up etc. regards, Joe
@thereel70713 ай бұрын
@@MrJoebailey the flies were fished static on the bottom, not in deep water at all. The mullet pick the flies up off the mud and then the indicator slides away, if there is some flow the flies should roll along the bottom but the fish seem more inclined to pick them up in very shallow water where there is little flow. Leader wise, I have a 12lb tapered leader cut down to an 8ft butt section. Then I attach about 6ft of 10lb fluoro and tie a dropper for a bung indicator where the butt section and tippet meet, then another dropper about 3ft from the point fly. So it should look like 8ft butt section/ indicator/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ dropper/ 3ft 10lb tippet/ point fly totalling around 14ft. I had the bass fishing the same method and set up 👍 tight lines!

Fantastic bass! Careful playing fish not 'on the reel', sometimes if a big fish turns and dives and you are applying drag to the fish using your fingers, the line can quickly dry because of the friction and 'jam' in your fingers and the fish might break the line. Talking from bitter experience.
@thereel70713 ай бұрын
@@justinphillips7392 must admit I avoid getting fish on the reel as I often lose fish while trying to reel in the line but appreciate what you’re saying, I often have too much line out for the distance I need to cast so winding that in once I’m casting to the ‘zone’ would probably help. Thanks for the tip 👍
@justinphillips73923 ай бұрын
@@thereel7071 yes you are right it's a faff, especially if the fish hits close in. I'm usually worrying about the spare line getting trapped around something if the fish takes line also.
