Honestly my 2 favorite characters. Freiza is just the main villain in Dragon Ball and he always comes back. He is obsessed with being the strongest in the universe and I respect that because he is powering up and getting stronger for nobody but himself. Straight evil. What makes me love a villain. Piccolo is never afraid to run the fade. He always had so much grit and he didn’t care how strong his opponent was he just focused on winning. Except for Buu but he was on another level than everyone in that arc.

In the manga, this played out much differently. In the manga, Frieza decided to transform right when Piccolo removed his weighted clothing. This was likely because Frieza realized that if Piccolo gave him enough trouble whilst his power was still sealed, it was best not to take any chances and for sure increase his power dramatically to the point that any slight boost Piccolo may get would be worthless. I’m kind of split on whether or not this was a good narrative decision. Here is what I mean: On the one hand, it shows that as cocky as Frieza was, he still could read the situation and wanted to ensure that he’d be able to close the gap enough to where his opponents would have no conceivable way of catching up. This was pretty consistent with Frieza’s character throughout, such as when transformed the first time because Vegeta was able to barely keep up and he realized the power of Gohan and Krillin was steadily increasing as the battle went on which meant that nearly boosting his power by 100% would be enough to shift the goalpost. Other examples would be when Frieza transformed for the 2nd time after Gohan nearly killed him in his so as not to take any chances despite Gohan using up all his power, when Frieza boosted his power by 49% when Goku was actually able to give him WAY too good of a fight when he was fighting at a mere %1, and finally when Frieza decides to just go 100% when fighting SSJ Goku because he was so helpless against Goku at 50%. On the other hand, not showing in the manga just how much Piccolo’s power increased is kind of a let down because the reader wouldn’t be able to properly gauge how much better Piccolo would have fared against Frieza’s second form. Including this filler segment at least gave Frieza more justification to boost his power given that Piccolo was able to land way too many good hits after Frieza was finally using all his power in his 2nd form so Frieza deciding to transform was fully justified. Just my thoughts.
