Great video!.. awesome achievement... I saw Buzz Aldrin speak for an hour here in NZ in 2010 about his experience ON the Moon and in space in space. Nerl Armstrong said it would be harder to fake than to succeed 👍🚀🇳🇿
The dropping of the tank and everything appearing fine, knowing it will be tested later, I understand. The relays not being replaced, or the voltage reduced, maybe someone didn't communicate that. But an engineer being told to not have it go beyond 80F, and the GAUGE only goes to 80F, how does this happen? A NASA engineer, testing equipment, is given a gauge that maxes out at the level he needs to cut off? How was this even an issue? Beyond that, it still can "technically" read the max allowable temp, but wasn't shut off.

Always think that Sy feels slightly responsible this happened on his shift , even though of course it was nothing to do with him . Terrific explanation
@Damocles162 жыл бұрын
Of course he would, if the crew had died. But as Gene Krants says in the movie "It's gonna be our finest hour". And it was : to me there are only two relevant Apollo missions, 11 and 13, period. So Sy must feel proud that it happened during his shift, because annother EECOM might have gotten it wrong !

It's amazing that the testing protocols allowed fused relays to not be caught. As he stated, they learned a lesson. But EQUALLY as bad, the redesign of the system to run at 65 VDC did not include a requirement to upgrade the 24 VDC rated relays that fused.
@cmillerg63064 жыл бұрын
Don Moore it's called human error. It is not predictable and avoidable. Yet NASA had enough desig smarts to allow the powerless CM get back. Also, their meticulous record keeping allowed them to examine the history of the tank and produce an account of the failure. U suspect many critical failures go unanalyzed. Mistakes always happen. So my POV is that, to quote Lovell, thus was a highly "successful failure"

ISTR that a mission to Mars crashed into the moon because someone forgot to convert imperial and metric values. If the paperwork describing the system does not equal the weight of the craft, it is not complete. So the adage goes. Procedures should have caught this but didn't. Lots of missed steps prior to its launch, but they did it right once they accepted the fact that it was not an instrument failure. It is interesting that they were fixated on instrument failures for as long as they were. Anyway, Sy and the team saved the crew. And for that they deserve a well done!

Why is NASA still using tape that was used back then. Why would they have a reason to record over tapes. When we are in a digital age?
@mrFalconlem5 жыл бұрын
Because they were using analogue tape in the early 80's for landsat and the newer tapes were shedding. Remember 1981 is only 10 years. Tape was used by tv stations U-matic up until the early 2000's ... just because its an old design or technology doesn't mean it doesn't work. The final report didn't rule out there still being tapes out there to find. Frankly they just don't know but suspect that these particular tapes were discarded and re-used. They were only telemetry tapes, and the video signal "piggybacked" on top of it. So really when they had a priority, the restored ones released are quite a bit sharper and clearer though. Its just they aren't as clear as they could have been if they were to find the originals if they've not been wiped. That's all. Maybe 20 percent more picture and 30 percent more clarity. Its kinda amazing they had video recordings at all. Remember the moon landing was not live on VIDEO, it was only live on AUDIO. The 1st EVA or moonwalk was broadcast live, but the degradation in signal was much worse after leaving Honeysuckle and Australia. Unfortunately the NASA historian and archivist in the mid-seventies didn't realize the importance, frankly they were dumping stuff up through the late 90's to civilians. It cost's money to maintain stuff and it was a major oversight.

This is proof it wasn't filmed in a studio in America. You couldn't get tv reception at honeysuckle creek, it was a downlink from the moon.
