I really want this to be good. The tone is so dark that they may try to lighten it up though, which could hurt it. I just hope they don't stray too far from the source material. Fingers crossed!

I saw quite a few groups there over the years but Roxy Music in 1973 and 74 topped them all.

If you took the stairs up to the bar you could just walk into the movies, you just had to wait 5 minutes after it started till the ticket collectors left, I saw "The Fox and the Hound" 14 times for free when I was a kid

I saw Black Sabbath and Status Quo there. Great venue 😊

The weird thing about this cinema is that I remember it being closed down for a while not long before it actually closed down! I think they were having a premiere there (can't remember what or if maybe even more than one) but there was a bit of refurbishment and I think maybe the bar area upstairs was smartened up. Anyway, that's the odd thing I still think about when I pass the place thinking it's pretty sad that what was a pretty good city centre cinema has now been sat there mothballed for what must be over twenty years now.

I saw The Jungle Book there with my Cub Scout troop. Later, I saw acts such as The Boomtown Rats, Elton John and who could forget Edinburgh's very own and finest Matt Vinyl & The Decorators! Best I saw was Gerry Rafferty......great musician.

I remember going to see sinbad movies with my dad when I was a kid. Loved the stars on the roof and the statues round the sides even if my dad booked seats in the smoking section!! can you imagine that now!!

I remember the Odeon well. Went there for my 10 th Birthday to see On Her Majesty’s Secret Service . Also saw Live and Let Die and they had speedboats in the foyer. The ceiling was beautiful with star if different sizes illuminated in different colours. There were also private booths.

I remember the Odeon very well… such fond memories! The good old days of the double-feature, the ice-cream girl and the intermissions! Just being in that area, whether walking or driving by, the cinema always springs to mind, even now. It was my favourite cinema back in the day and is truly sorely missed. I even recall when, sometime in (I think) the 1980s, it became the first cinema (at least in Edinburgh) to introduce non-smoking areas. They designated the rear rows of the stalls as the no-smoking zone. The funny part (irritating at the time!) was that the smokers in the front section would puff away, and a curtain of smoke would rise and drift back into the non-smoking area, choking us non-smokers and creating a haze that masked our view of the screen! The smoke, of course, didn’t know where it wasn’t allowed to go! 😂 It was badly thought out but amusing in retrospect. The last thing I saw at the Odeon was “Raging Bull”, I took my dad to see it. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the original release but a re-screening some years later, although I could be wrong.

Really enjoyed your behind the scenes footage before it closed back in 2003 , can't believe that it has been unoccupied for over 20 years and that it was nearly demolished due to years of neglect ! , i think there were plans about 10 years ago to turn it into a multi entertainment centre by Susan Boyle's brother ! , but he turned out to be a bit of a rogue with all the broken promises and lack of funds. At long last the Scotsman group started work in April to transform it into a nightclub , bar and cinema returning the art deco building to it's former glory. It is the best cinema in the world for me due to 2 films back in 1977 , The Spy Who Loved Me and my favourite of all time , Star Wars , i had no idea while i waited in a long queue around the block on that cold & dark December afternoon the mind blowing impact that i was about to experience , a treasured memory that will stay with me , always !

Great video. I loved this cinema as a kid. Had so much character. I saw this building getting work done to it today. Lots of vans and a cherry picker. Heard it might be another cinema/bar like the Dominion on morningside.
