Yes we've found that aeration does not last long for drain areas that are undersized or placed in low-lying areas/water table. Also if the stone around the pipes has dirt intrusion or roots present, replacement would be the best option. HOWEVER, if the drain field is adequately sized and not in a water table, but merely needs the biomat to be broken up to work again, aeration is a viable and affordable alternative to replacement.

I am wanting to rejuvenate my drain field since its failing. But the guy that came out to pump my septic said since i have "chambers" i cant do a rejuvenation. Is that true?
@PumpThatSeptic
@PumpThatSeptic 8 ай бұрын
It's not impossible, but it's difficult to restore them because the clogged soil is below the chambers and not accessible with the air probe. You may get enough restoration by probing next to the chambers. Another option would be to retrofit something a SludgeHammer that introduces rejuvenating bacteria and oxygen into your system. It would heal itself that way over time, as long as the current drain area is properly sized and no roots present. Otherwise an immediate resolution would be new drain area. FYI- salt bad for septic system . indisputable fact - slows the growth of and kills sludge eating bacteria, crystallize in the soil in leach field, etc... aerating liquid affluent , not solids is beneficial to bacteria .

My first tank has two lids. The lid closest to the inlet from the house has over 60% solid/scum. The far half of it has only .16% solid/scum. This isn't to be confused with my third lid which is for the liquids. Which of the two readings do I go by?
@dervinwitmer9059

The first compartment is where the buildup will occur. That compartment would determine frequency of tank pumping since that is the most likely compartment to build up scum and block the inlet pipe.

My septic was pumped on Nov 2021 and I have to clean my filter every 2-3 months. Recently I have to clean it every month and it is caked with solids which is backing up the system. I am very cautious about what goes down my drains. I do have a water softener that backwashes every 2 weeks. 3 people live in my home and my system is 1,000 gallons. Seems crazy that I have to have my system pumped in less than a year. I’ve changed this filter 5 times since November 2021. I only use liquid detergents and never use harsh cleaners. Every month I flush a green gobbler treatment pod down the toilet. What can be causing this to get clogged so quickly? I read it doesn’t need to be cleaned this frequently.

@@jeffking3693 it actually is a bacteria blend. AfterShock Soil Absorption Restorative PURPOSES: Restores drainage to clogged and sluggish drainage fields and structures. Eliminates odors. DESCRIPTION: AfterShock is a unique blend of laboratory-enhanced, naturally-occurring, primarily aerobic organisms that are type-specific to the various substances that typically clog drain fields and leaching structures. AfterShock also contains a proprietary, bacteria-friendly, time-release oxidizing agent that will accelerate the bacterial action of the organisms in the product to restore drainage in most soil absorption areas. AfterShock’s consortium of bacteria and oxidizer can be applied at the same time. The oxygen-accelerated bacterial action will quickly digest the organic solid materials that reduce the drain field’s capacity to absorb water, effectively restoring drainage through a natural process. AfterShock contains no pathogens, acids, or volatile organic compounds. AfterShock is completely safe to store and use according to directions.

I've lived in my place since new, 24 years and never had to pump my septic tank. Beginners luck? I am careful not to put anything but toilet paper down the commodes No coffee grounds or fat down the disposal. Yes, I have a garbage disposal. I am not particularly careful as to using cleaners sparingly, just use them as I would if I were on a city sewer. With that said I think I am just lucky (so far). I am sure the advice given on this video is good advice.

You may be pushing the limit and new drain fields are costly. Why not just measure the sludge level once in a while with a long stick marked off in feet with a couple feet of velcro tacked on the end? Slowly submerge it to the bottom at the inlet and outlet ends, leave it for a minute or so. While it's in, note how high the water level is. Pull it out and if the sludge level is 25-30% of the total depth, bottom of tank to surface of water, it should be pumped. Keep the poop off the stoop!

I can honestly say, that after more than 20 years in the Septic & Sewer Industry, I don't recommend Effluent Filters to my customers. Typically, homeowners either don't know they have an Effluent Filter or forget about it, which leads to unnecessary problems... potentially big expensive problems, like a back-up, because of clogged Effluent Filter. To be fair, some of the newer technology systems require Effluent Filters, and obviously, I respect and appreciate the manufacturers requirements. Nevertheless, in my opinion, an Effluent Filter is potentially an added maintenance headache that most homeowners don't need and don't want.. Not to mention, an Effluent Filter in the Outlet Baffle of a Septic Tank can prevent or prohibit proper airflow, and I'm a big proponent of Oxygenation or Oxygen Transfer in all Septic Systems. In fact, some manufacturers don't want Effluent Filters in Septic Tanks, because they can impede airflow. Lastly, in my state of New Hampshire, we've had Private On-site Wastewater Treatment Systems a.k.a. Sub-surface Disposal Systems for decades, and nobody needed or used Effluent Filters until about 20 years ago. As a result, I can tell you from experience, a properly designed, properly installed, and properly maintained Septic System with a Stone & Pipe Leaching Field, should last 30 years or more without an Effluent Filter. This has convinced me that Effluent Filters aren't necessary, because we never needed them before, and in my opinion, we don't need them today either.

Thanks for the discussion. I’m always interested in hearing what other people have to say about septic systems in other states. We have found effluent filters to be very helpful especially when there is short term high usage in a system that could potentially put solids out into the drainfield causing premature failure. Higher water usage in homes today also contributes to unprocessed sewage ending up in the drainfield. Properly designed systems are often very expensive and so with the minimum requirements at the house apartments right here the athletic filter is a good insurance to increase pumping frequency and maintain clean effluent to the drainfield. We appreciate your comments.
