Very harsh, driven rendering of the Preludes -- doesn't give the lyricism a chance. Interesting for once.

This is just simply magnificent and very moving - thank you! This is Pollini at his absolute best; the integrity, passion, intellectual grasp, flawless technique - and here also the wonderful evidence of his incandescently beautiful sound at that time (helped by the most marvellous piano here) - this aspect of his playing often overlooked. What a beautiful recorded sound too, from a live source.

OMG! I was at Salle Playel the year before at a Pollini recital, and noticed that in the following year's brochure, this concert was scheduled, which surprised me because Pollini hadn't recorded any Bach at that stage. I so wanted to go, but by then I would be back in my own country, Australia, and sadly miss it. I had no idea it was recorded (which I assume is a secret recording or bootleg??). And it is SO much better than his official recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier, many years later, which I actually don't like. I love this one, though. Thank you! You've gifted me a time capsule and an opportunity to change my mind about his interpretation of Bach.

The performance of the Diabelli Variations is outstanding. Although playing at a fast tempo is technically challenging, the ability to do so maximizes the musical effect, making it feel as though the composer's intentions are vividly expressed in this grand, fantastical, and improvisational piece. I have encountered a truly exceptional performance.

God this is TERRIBLE. So Gould was a disaster at Mozart, and Pollini was a disaster at Bach. Well, they both are good at Beethoven - usually.
@JohannesB1004 ай бұрын
@@ultrametric9317 that’s your view. Personally I don’t like Gould’s Beethoven and I’m fascinated by Pollini’ Bach 😉
@aidan4624Ай бұрын
Gould’s Beethoven is famously unpopular and contains many of his most eccentric ideas, which in the context of Gould really says a lot. Comparing Gould and Pollini feels like comparing Schubert and Webern or Mozart and Messiaen. They’re so different (especially their Beethoven) that it’s kind of hard to even put them in the same category.

@@aidan4624 When he was good at it he was great. Yes his Appassionata is garbage. His Op. 34 and Op. 35 variations are definitive performances. But he was terrible across the board at Mozart.

I am not a huge fan of Pollini, but his Kreisleriana is incredible. I think he really got it, never heard anything like this. I wonder how does this compare with the deutsche grammophon version of 2002.
