We're planning on trying to catch the big boy steam engine in motion. Somewhere between Roseville and Truckee. Any suggestions?
@ac6044cw6 ай бұрын
I'm not local to the area, so I basically only know the places that I covered in the video. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of people out watching Big Boy (and chasing it by road), so wherever you decide to go - get there early, otherwise you might not be able to park or get a decent view.

Dutch vans still in use in 2000? And they weren't yet using the Mk 3 gen vans on the Enterprises, then?

Fantastic footage. Unusual to see a Cork train made up of just 6 mk3 coaches at the start.

Thanks - yes, DMUs and EMUs seem to be taking over passenger trains the world over. I haven't been back to Ireland since 2005, but really enjoyed my visits back then. Maybe it's time for another visit...

Yes, we had lovely weather when we were there. Had to wait hours for a train climbing the hill though - just unlucky timing, several went downhill on the the other track, which you can't see from the horseshoe curve area... Worth the wait though!

I have a question do CN trains from Vancouver to Squamish still keep going on its way to quesnel BC to Prince George BC? I just wanted to know because I haven’t been seeing any new videos of CN trains going through Quesnel and Williams Lake?

They run north to PG from Williams lake. I hear they still serve the mill in 100 mile aswell weekly or something.

@ac6044cw3 жыл бұрын
I agree - but 2006 to 2021 is 15 years and the SD40-2's are getting old now (and fuel thirsty compared to the modern stuff).

For 2007, that is some AMAZING QUALITY! How does a 13 year old video (I'm from 2020) manage to get HD Quality this good?!
@ac6044cw3 жыл бұрын
It was originally shot on a Sony HC3 HDV (digital tape based) camcorder, which wasn't even 'Full HD' (it was 1440 x 1080, interlaced). It was converted to 1920 x 1080 progressive - Full HD - when I edited it, and yes, it looks pretty decent for the time.

Don''t have URL but read this past week that CN is discontinuing (or has discontinued) North van to Williams lake services and will use those traci sfor storage. Williams Lake will be service via Prince George (so long detour to get to Vancouver).

Interesting as of this summer they have gone to 200 car trains and have 2 DPU’s mid-train. I live about 300 yards from the main line in Sicamous where they cross the Eagle River. Good video. Definitely in notch 8 on this pull.
@ac6044cw4 жыл бұрын
"Definitely in notch 8 on this pull." I agree - this was a warm, dry day, and the locos were still going into wheelslip/wheelcreep at times (the screeching noises and changes in diesel engine note are the giveaways for anyone watching this). So at 200 loaded cars that's about 27,000 tonnes (and 22,000 hp) in total? Have CP increased the length of the coal trains as well recently?

I grew up in Kamloops back in the 70’s where the CP Rail locomotive colours were Tuscan Red and Grey, but I grew up in Brocklehurst across from the CN mainline. Kamloops was (and still is) a railroad town!

Yes, it certainly feels like one with the CP mainline going right through it :-)

The Valenta's have too much turbo noise for me - I prefer the 'bassy' sound of the 68's. A GE EVO or 7FDL is even better, but that's on a different continent :-)

I've dreamed of filming trains at Morants Curve for 30 years but never made it. Now that I'm retiring in 6 months I hope to make the trip from Ohio and spend 2 weeks filming trains in those same spots. Thanks for rekindling my dream. Great job!
@ac6044cw4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth the trip - just keep your plans flexible and your fingers crossed for decent weather. Two days before I shot the Morant's Curve video there was torrential rain, causing a rock slide that closed the line over Kicking Horse Pass for a day or so. 5 years later on another trip I couldn't get to Morant's Curve because bad weather had damaged a bridge so the road to it was closed. The scenery is still fabulous though even in the rain :-)

My pleasure - it's a beautiful part of the world. Would be even better if there were more trains on that line, but after CN took over I think it was inevitable that more 'through' traffic between north BC and Vancouver would go via Kamloops.
