You don't EVER want to block a knife swing with your hand. You're going to get an artery, tendon or vein severed that way. It's cute to practice, but it's not practical AT ALL. -a highly experienced martial artist

Ok first, ideally his hand isn't touching the knife but at the wrist; plus defending yourself against a dagger while being unarmed yourself is a last resort anyways. Second, these are instructions from a medieval manuscript for defending against anti armour daggers; they're not great for cutting, some disarm techniques involve grabbing the blade. Year old comment but idc.

one thing i noticed! this pig snouted helm is actually very good at dissipating impacts away from the head. you can see, the helm has plenty of dead space on top. so when he gets hit up there, the steel can dent and take the impact. its almost like a crumple zone in a car. medieval people were every bit as smart as us, they just weren't as good at passing knowledge down yet.

Well spotted and said! People haven't really changed that much, sure we're more educated in certain fields but could your average person in the west for instance, make a candle? Make soap? Patch the holes in their clothing or identify edible forage from inedible forage? These would be fairly routine chores for people for thousands of years but all but lost within the last few hundred but for people in regions too poor not to simply be able to buy new things.

( in min 5:23) or is in different position? best regards from spain!

This video proves that wielding the hammer did nothing. You'd better ram into the opponent and throw him down on the ground, pull off his visor, then you can kill him in whatever way you like.
@GeorgieBonsoir
@GeorgieBonsoir 3 жыл бұрын
This video proves the opposite, that the hammer is fully capable of knocking out an armoured opponent, where you could then, as you say, "kill him in whatever way you like." That final blow at the end very well could have been fatal, had it been a metal pollaxe, but at the very least it would have knocked them down or out, ending the fight.
@adamding3873

@@GeorgieBonsoir 3:00 it was hit square on the head but caused zero damage. So I believe it is useless. Grappling is more effective.

@adamding3873
@adamding3873 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgieBonsoir As explained on 3:30, it is a simulate, blunt, but he did not say it was plastic. Also on 4:26, he said you can hardly kill with the hammer. It is used to pull the armor off or grab people to ground, then do the kill. But why bother? Grappling is far more direct and effective to take people down, and/or to pull the visor off. We don't know for sure how medieval armored knights fought each other. After all, this is a simulate, and not so convincing. I believe many of the medieval knights were not so well armored. The helmet may not be so solid, or there may be larger gaps between the plates. The revived armors are too well, which make the hammer useless.
@GeorgieBonsoir
@GeorgieBonsoir 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamding3873 Look at the thing, does it look like it's made of metal? Also, a normal hammer is 'blunt'. And yes, you are rarely going to kill someone in plate armour with a pollaxe or any weapon by bashing them on the head, although, that bash on the head is going to make it a whole lot easier to, as you say, grapple them to the ground and stab them. Imagine you try and run at someone wearing plate armour, in aims to tackle them... are they going to stand there and take it? No, they're going to hit you with their pollaxe, knocking you down, where they then stab you in the neck. Pollaxes, and any other anti-armour weapon, are for defending against attacks as much as they are for dealing them out. Once again, there is a reason that people used them.
