You shouldnt be teaching anybody about this. Man you made several mistakes on this demonstration alone. I guarantee you with grease on the journal, your plastigage not centered under the bearing cap, and the way you installed the bearing shell into the rod assembly. Im not trying to be 'one of those guys" . Im a 35 year motorcycle technician and had the best instructor on the planet when it comes to a motorcycle tech school. Mickey Baugus. He actually did write the book on this. Look him up, its a fact. His son Mike Baugus took his position when he moved up the ladder, so im not simply blowin out my blowhole.. its sad these guys believe this is the correct way. Never once did you mention A C mic, or a snap guage, or proper clearances, or the different colors of plasti-gage. Or checking in different areas along the journal, or an out of round big end con rodĺƙ

We asked Shane quick and he said "Honestly, I would never call cleaning jets an advantage but more of a necessity when new one are not available (as in true OEM replacements). What?? No, uh uh. Sir, please, step away from the bike. You might get away with this on a dirt bike, which gets a chassis grease teardown maintenance every 40-50 hours, but those seals are MEANT to seal between the cage and inner race. They are designed to spec, simple as that, and when you change the assembly, you're not getting a proper seal. Like I said, you'll get away with it, maybe even for a very long time if you use good grease, and are even semi-regular shoving some more on there. But what if you dump your bike attempting to cross a flooded trail, and sandy water gets in there? On a street bike that gets less maintenance and more road-grime splashing up, compromising the seal like that will have you doing the job again in half a season. I could rant all day about it, but I'll just leave this with you: if a bit of greased-rubber-on-steel was a problematic amount of friction, wheel bearings wouldn't use seals.
@How2Wrench11 күн бұрын
First off, thank you for commenting in detail. Let me take a stab at a response after talking with Shane. You should take some time to talk with a bearing manufacture to better understand what you missed or in all fairness disagree with in the video. You mentioned wheel bearings "wouldn't use seals" but take measure and inspection of any bearing and what you will find is the seals DO NOT contact the balls, rollers or cages. They seal against the housing or a race so they intentional do not interfere with with the function of the bearing and do what they are intended for....sealing. As shown in this video, not only will this shown misaligned assembly interfere with the bearing, the seal will be deformed and potentially seal "less". When I asked Shane this (I'm mentoring under him, so I love to learn from comments too) he asked me to think about how how effective a seal would be and how long it would last going up/down following the contour of the bearing cage? He asked "wouldn't the seal expect much long life sealing against the stationary OD race that is pressed in place and the seal's ID pressed against the shaft OD and timken bearing ID race's flat surface? That made a lot of sense to me. Jenny We love sharing comments like this with Shane. High fives for the likes or making us better by a chiming in your thoughts. You can definitely take the bowl off while its still in the bike with a stubby Phillips head. You don't need the carburetor detached from the intake manifold and you definitely don't need it sideways.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to have the larger 'holding' wrench on the opposite side, so that by 'resting' on the bench as a lever it would be resisting the anti-clockwise torque being applied to the crows foot?

You may be new here so let me give a chance to our ideology in teaching in this sensitive world. We did not call them out by name, shame anyone and never do. We are often told by viewers to call out the name of the shop and in 17 years and over 800 videos on here NEVER have. We are not in the business of shaming others. We are called at times to be expert witnesses in trials where work like this caused death or injury. To that point we take teaching what goes wrong as much as right by offering a course that details the cases in a course for dealers. This really wakes up newer techs in "it really matters". What to we do? We teach skills sets and technology to schools, OEMs, dealers, independents and share this openily with DIY. Teaching what not to do and the consequences that follow are impactful methods examples in learning. We hope that in reading this you will see a different light, gain respect and bring your own value to our community.

I've done a lot of bearing installs. We use a crock pot with oil in it. Reduces the chance of blueing the bearing.......

Used the oven technique on a small block Chevy, crankshaft timing gear, years ago after reading about it in a magazine. Slipped right on. Never thought about using a griddle.

I've been watching you a long time and have a very high regard for you. I've learned a lot - thank you. Can I ask you question about safety? I'm curious about when you would wear gloves or not? Intuitively, brake fluid isn't something I want on my hands, but you are completely ok with it. What is your take? Thanks

I think if you look for a chart on the amperage max for each voltage you can determine. I 99% believe it will on 220V for sure and even 98% sure on 110v but since I'm not in front it to recall or test and not a welder fulltime, I'd suggust to reach out to them on the Amazon link. So pushing the tab down will lift the float up? This has really thrown me for a loop. I kept lifting the tab up but never could really tell much of a difference in it rising or going down lower. Seemed like lifting it was raising the float and yes I tilted the carb to check it. I finally just tried bring back even and not sure if my plug was dirty or what but would not crank as it has been running really rich I believe from all the smoke and the black spooge that keeps dirtying up the plug. I'll try going even again with it but I don't have a measuring tool. Ive been working on it for like three days now and am highly frustrated as I bought this bike with new top end and many other replacements but never really had a lot of power due to bogging on the low end. Jets are clean and all as well. How touchy are the carbs with the float height and adjustments? Also, you can measure on its side like that?

I have a dragging clutch - been that way for years. I can’t kick it in gear cold but can when hot if right after a stall, though still with difficulty. Otherwise clutch operates fine. Using thinner gear oil may have caused the hot vs cold difference. The part about sticky plates is interesting. Everything in there is expensive. A set of factory friction plates is bumping up against $250. A lot of money with not a lot of confidence it will change a thing.
