@@all4honor Scubs and circulators are two peas in a pod! I would say what sets some techs apart from others are the ones that take initiative to make sure we have most if not all of the supplies that will be on the sterile field available in the room before the case. Otherwise it’s a lot of extra running around for the circulator during the surgery. I’ve spoke with other nurses about this as well and it makes a huge difference for the flow of the case! Techs have more of an insight for specific supplies surgeons prefer etc. The great techs, in my opinion are the ones who aren’t afraid to verify with the surgeon or take great notes for cases to make sure they’re prepared. ♥️ Hope that helps!

I'll give you a REALLY good story as to why it's important to count everything that could get lost in the body: I was born in 1985 with 5 heart defects. Two days after my first birthday in 1986, I had my first open heart surgery. My surgeon was primarily an adult surgeon but had done open heart surgeries on kids before. I was less than double my birth weight at about 14lbs, so my heart was about the size of an egg. I was to have a PDA and VSD repair, but neither of those repairs was actually performed (don't ask me why). When the surgeon went to fix the PDA, he nicked my descending aorta, which happens, that wasn't the malpractice. Nor was it malpractice for the surgeon to clamp off that nick because if he hadn't, I would have bled to death in less than a minute. What WAS malpractice is that he kept that descending aorta clamped for the rest of the surgery while he closed me up, took me off bypass, and when they rolled me into recovery, where I promptly coded. They rolled me back into the OR, opened me up, and discovered his mistake. This was approximately 74 minutes after he MADE the mistake. All the blood that was supposed to go to 80% of my body ended up in my lungs, making me lose 25% of my lung capacity; it caused an ischemic injury to my spinal cord (a partial spinal break, basically), so I've been a paraplegic ever since, AND my kidneys started throwing clots after they corrected the issue, so I went into acute kidney failure and a coma for two weeks. Since then, I've had 35 more surgeries, and in the next two months, I will have surgeries #37 and #38, though not really connected to that first surgery because i have cataracts. Most of my surgeries can be traced back to that first surgery, though, so remember OR nurses, count exactly what's going into the body, and make sure everything that is SUPPOSED to come out of the body, does!!!!

What type of person do you recommend to become an or nurse?
@Rosypena2 ай бұрын
Anyone who has a genuine interest in the OR should try it out! I think someone who appreciates structure, organization, checklists, leading, and direct communication, would do well and enjoy the OR.

Tbh idk why you even need to be an RN to be a circulator lol…no but for real I’m an OR nurse and looking to leave because there is 0 autonomy as a nurse. You are finding items on a list. Literally. I love scrubbing more than circulating because I actually learn things while scrubbing. Also the surgical team and Drs have 0 respect for OR nurses because they know you know nothing nursing, nothing about the patient, and have no skills. Best advice is do not only circulate as an OR nurse make sure you learn how to scrub and try to learn every service. I did because I work at a level 1 trauma so we had to learn every service. Also when you start in the OR as a new grad it’s VERY hard to go to another specialty because they know you have no nursing skills so they rather take a new grad. I like the OR because it’s very chill and easy (once you learn where everything is at) but you are not directly pushing meds (only onto the field), you are not doing any assessments, no IVs, so make sure when you go to the OR That is the only things you want to do because you are severely limiting yourself as a nurse !
@ionebae91572 ай бұрын
Sure, OR nursing is very different from other types of nursing but I strongly disagree that it doesn't require skill. Go into any operating room and see how smoothly the surgery goes if the OR nurse is not skilled at their job. Knowing how to place an IV, do an assessment, or push meds is not what makes you a real nurse. As far as doctors not respecting nurses in the OR, you may be in for a rude surprise when you go to the floor and realize that those same doctors don't respect floor nurses either. Personally, I have worked with many surgeons who do respect me as a circulator because they realize that they need me to be able to do their job smoothly and effectively, and that when we all work well together as a team, it improves outcomes. I have also worked with rude surgeons who are disrespectful, but I don't for one second think that that's a reflection of my skills or lack thereof. With the growing demand for nurses, I don't think that starting out in the OR as a new grad will make it that difficult to transfer to another specialty later on. True, you will need just as much training and orientation as a new grad since OR skills don't transfer to the floor (and vice versa), but most hospitals will be more than willing to train you. There are tons of RN fellowship/transition to practice programs nowadays. Basically if you have an RN license and a pulse and are willing to learn, pretty much anywhere will take you lol.

Congrats!! Wishing you all the best!! ♥️🎉👏🏽 Words of caution from my own personal experience as an orientee in the OR: You may come across negative energy from discontent co-workers, but don’t let their bad attitudes make you feel like it’s a reflection of your own value as an OR nurse. You’re knowledgeable on the latest standards of practice and know more than you think. Don’t be afraid to ask for a different preceptor if yours sucks! I’m here if you need any input along the way!!! XO ♥️

I loved this! Super helpful and in depth. I would love a second video on this topic that goes over even more details plsss! Since many clinical experiences don't provide you with the opportunity to go to the operating room, I have to find out as much info on KZbin! Im on my last clinical rotation and unfortunately, I have not seen the operating room at all but I think I would love it. I would also like if you could go more in depth about scrub nursing! And do the duties of an operating room nurse require you to do both circulating and scrub?? Do you pick what you want to do? Are you required to know both circulating and scrub nurse roles?? etc.

Yeah document and Amazon or Zillow lol jk.I’ve been a scrub tech for 5 years and I’m getting enough of it. Just finished nursing school and going to a critical care area where I can manage, organize my life, and use the nursing skills. My back won’t do that heavy lifting and standing anymore and I think being a circulator nurse is also not for me because you know what I am talking about. You need to tell them too that being a circulator you won’t have a chance to use your nursing skill that you have learned from your nursing school. This job is good for nurses who are looking for a retirement.
@Rosypena7 ай бұрын
Lots of standing for scrub techs/scrub nurses for sure! Heavy lifting definitely applies to all the members helping in the OR. I agree we don't use many skills we learned in nursing school besides foleys/IVs.
