I think at least part of the reason why today we have so many making knives who don't really design them, and so many designing knives who don't really make them, may be because it's pretty easy to find inspirations for new designs in other designs that already exist on shelves and in historical pieces in illustration photos in books while spending enough time in a shop to be viable financially enough to support a family and have a family life as an apprentice maker and eventually as a maker learning all of the subtleties of making the tools. And more more difficult to learn all the subtleties of knife function and how all of the design elements work together through thousands of hours of earning a living using the tools through careers like being professional chef or prep cook, fishing and trapping commercially, or as a game guide. And then the same goes for the other side of the coin. If you've never put the time in at the shop, then you're never going to be able to fully appreciate all of the steps involved in making the tools and the challenges that can arise. But if you've never spent the time using the knives day in and day out under all the various circumstances of human strengths and weaknesses of fatigue and exhaustion, and all of the temperatures and weather conditions that come along with making a living using the tools, then you're never going to be able to fully appreciate what someone who does needs. You're just going to offer them what you think they need. And some people's thinking can be way off the mark these days in our modern world where so few even know how to use a knife to optimum benefit. making tuna salad much less anything really challenging. I've spent my whole life studying this industry and several years working in it, and in my experiences the vast majority of the people with the resources to make knives know very little about using them, and the vast majority of people who have actually used knives enough to understand their function do not have the inclination to live out their lives in a shop.
