This brought back memories. I'm from Shipley at the other side of Bradford, and used to come here regularly. Trouble is, now I would be unable to climb the stairs. I think there are a lot more outside exhibits than there were.

Were the people who died recovered? Or are they still buried in the collapsed tunnel shaft under their houses? I’ve heard there is a whole train including a driver in another Lancashire tunnel collapse to this day.

@@MrTreacletime The bodies are recovered not to sure where they are buried. I've not heard about the Lancashire one do you have any further information?

The tunnel runs partly under Victoria Park. If you go into the park from the A6, turn immediately right. On that path there are filled in boreholes, only a few inches wide, from a few years ago when they injected concrete or something similar in to stabilise the tunnel.

@@JoshHodginsTrains well there is talks about it been around a while as was supposed to go to Bolton. Trouble with the old Bradley Fold line is most of the line has housing, so would be interesting to see how they could do the line.

I think the local signalman was known as "Black Harry". There's loads of info online. After the collapse I understand that they filled the tunnel with colliery waste. I moved to Salford in 1959 when I was 10 and used to play at the southern end of the tunnel, there was a stream running out of it and we caught sticklebacks. The portal was filled so we couldn't get inside. Between the East Lancs Road and Patricroft was a desolate wasteland. I revisited the area in 2019, it's a nice walk from Patricroft to the East Lancs Road, the approach to the portal has been built up and grassed over, I couldn't find any evidence of the portal itself. I've put some photos on Flickr, but I can't post a link, my user name is rtbcomp and they're in an album called "Black Harry".
