What a silly comment from John Oates. Musicians had been making music videos since the 1950's. Even The Beatles made music videos. The only difference was there was now a network who showcased those videos 24 hours a day.

@@creativewriter3887 This is an absurd statement. Why would 1980s Madonna resent an older woman traveling the world, collaborating with obscure queer artists, and partying it up? Why is performing your songs and music on stage acting Madonna? It might be for a calculated ambitious performer like you, but like John said, it was just about the music for alot of people before MTV took over.
@hutch1197
@hutch1197 2 жыл бұрын
Prince, David Bowie, Ozzy, Mick Jagger, Alice Cooper, etc. I could list a million musicians who put on an act when they're on stage. It's more than just the music. There's costuming, emoting, facial expressions, hand gestures, dancing, etc. Madonna was no more calculating or ambitious than any of those people. They were all acting. But once again, the woman gets scrutinized for being calculating and ambitious. Taylor Swift said it best: "There's a different vocabulary for men and women. When a man does something, it's strategic. When a woman does the same thing, it's calculated."
@richalderson6069
@richalderson6069 2 жыл бұрын
@@hutch1197 A feminist perspective? Madonna IS a calculating ambitious performer who quote, wanted to "rule the world ". Some artists just want to sing, write and perform their songs on stage, that's the point John Oates was making.
@hutch1197
@hutch1197 2 жыл бұрын
@@richalderson6069 You describe her as though her ambitions were sinister. I understand what Oates was saying. But Madonna's point was that when you perform on stage, you ARE acting. When Oates performs on stage, does he just stand there motionless/expressionless, strumming a guitar and singing into a microphone? Of course not. He dances around, often wears outfits designed for him. He emotes, makes dramatic facial expressions, etc. There is stage lighting and other things to amp up the show. Does Oates normally do those things in everyday life when not on stage? Of course not. Why? Because that's a performance. It's part of an ACT. So, Madonna was pointing out that he's already an actor, just doing it live on stage. Doing a music video is just taking it to another medium and another level.
@richalderson6069

@@hutch1197 Playing music on it's own terms isn't acting. But making videos where you play characters or dressing up with dance routines is. But of course there are different degrees to which people have an act or not and obviously once the MTV video age started happening you either embraced it or you would probably not have major success in the pop world and Madonna knew that. It also helped that she was strong and confident and was completely comfortable in the spotlight.
@Project_-jq7jw

You don’t seem to understand. If you want to consistently play a song a certain way, you have to act. What I mean is that you make your voice a certain way. You many also need to put your mind and feelings into a certain place as well. It’s acting. How else can you play a song that way unless through acting. I shouldn’t have to lay this out before you, but another example is let’s say you try to record all song right out of bed. We’ll it won’t be the same as if you’ve been up all day, had your coffee and had some warm up time for your voice. You can’t say there isn’t some amount amid acting therefore.

@hutch1197
@hutch1197 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-no7vv5gi2v Why not? On stage, most musicians, even rock musicians, incorporate movement, emotion, facial expressions, etc. that they wouldn't otherwise use. There's even costuming and lighting. Instead of the script being spoken in words, it's sung. It's absolutely acting. John Oates himself wears specific outfits, dances around and makes all sorts of exaggerated facial expressions when performing. Does he walk around doing that when not on stage? No. Because, on stage, he's acting.

@@user-no7vv5gi2v It wasn't stupid at all. It was brilliant. She wasn't equating anything. She was explaining how they were relative--a point that you didn't get. The industry may be making a third less than it was, but there are less middlemen to pay now, more direct connects between artist/content and fan. More emphasis on making good music, and less scamming consumers. The industry scammed us for years while getting fat, Napster was like karma. Rant over
