A strange thing happened on that trailhead many months after, I frequently hike out there, normally every weekend in the fall, and I recall when he went missing, months later right there at the end of the left hand side of the fence and gate at the parking area, I noticed a very nice and elaborate memorial was set up, consisting of a metal sign that hung from an L shaped metal frame , that had his face printed on it, along with his name, there was a also a concrete paving stone with a large ceramic vase full of flowers sitting atop it at the end of the last fence post, and thumb tacked to the wood of the fence was a laminated card which read 'Placed here with permission from the national forest service rangers' or something along those lines. Looked like it had just been placed there if not earlier that same day, then the day before. I thought 'Oh well how nice, his family or something had to have come down to do this, or some locals geocachers acting on their behalf (on account of how nice the custom made metal sign was).' I poured out a drink to his memory and proceeded down to the azalea seep, and then up rattlesnake ridge before circling back, which took about two hours, but when I passed the gate to leave, it was gone. All of it. The sign, the flowers, the block and vase, even the little card, the whole thing. Which seemed utterly bizarre, because apparently they had permission to place that, and I couldn't imagine someone seeing that, and deciding to steal it, or if they did, maybe the just the vase or the sign, but even the little card? It was a big heavy vase and the concrete block was a foot square and several inches thick , so you couldn't just easily carry it off by yourself all in one go anyway, unless it was multiple people or you made a couple trips, but evidently that's just what someone did. It's a shame, I wish they had left it, it seemed like a lovely tribute to a man who truly loved nature, and it's tragic he met his end in those enigmatic pine hills, where the orchids grow and the bayou flows. I hope he has found peace at the end of the trail.

Negative. Charles Page's patent was a "Improvement to Airships". Nothing more. HIs accomplishments should be recognized, however, he did not invent the balloon. The patent search is avaiable for the patent. Patent #817442, dated April 10, 1906. You do a disservice to Mr. Page's legacy by promoting falsehoods. There is no controversy here, only the one being stirred up. I challenge the maker of this video and local historian to prove it wrong.

I'm from Louisiana and didn't know that. There is so much black history that we just don't know about. I'm 42 years old today, 5/5/2024, and I just found out that Charles Frederick Page predates the Wright Brothers. You can't be a lazy learner when it comes to black history because it's literally buried away or erased.

This is how charity should work. It should all be given from the heart and of free will. Charity taken from tax dollars is not charity but rather theft because it was taken and given without the consent of the victim. The recipient of those tax dollars did nothing to deserve or repay the fruit of someone else's labor. The rest of us are struggling to much to have food taken from our families mouths.

Page didn't build an airplane. He build a balloon-propelled airship. Airships already existed for many years before. The Wright Bros invented a heavier-than-air fixed-wing airplane. It doesn't matter if his design pre-dated theirs if they're literally completely different things. Sick of the misinformation. Shame on you for putting more garbage on the internet.

What always stuck in my mind was that as a young boy Charles always watched dragonflies and wanted to copy their flight activity. When I look at the sketch of his airplane invention it doesn't resemble a dragonfly, but sort of like a blimp. Now the Wright brothers plane looks like a dragonfly. Because it is known that whyte men stole black mens' inventions and patented them; I wonder if a switch happened and the blimp-like structure was advertised as Charles's plane and the Wright brothers magically got his DRAGONFLY LOOKING airplane. I really feel something isn't right there.

All I see is black people desperately trying to steal white inventions and history because you have none. THAT is what's known. This guy tied two balloons to a boat. That's an airship. White man invented airships 50 YEARS before him. Wright Brothers had years of designs and logs proving their achievement. Stop trying to steal history. You will lose every time.

This story is misleading to say the least - there were numerous patented & working airships 50 years prior to Page's invention. Did Page's airship even work? ANY recreations of it? If no, WHY NOT? it wouldnt be expensive to make one.

The Wright brothers flew their plane in 1903. Page patented his ship in 1904.. Also, airships have been around for 400 years. In 1785, they flew over the English channel with one. In 1900, the first zeppelin took flight. What exactly did Page invent..?
