I think Nikon didn't do themselves a favor with the 50mm f1.8 S being so stellar AND being considerably cheaper than the 35mm f1.8 S. They should have priced the 35mm identically to the 50mm. I picked a new 35mm S up over the holidays as they had a discount offer going, bringing the price down to the 50mm price. The regular price is about USD250 too high for what it is in comparison to the 50mm.

Are you still happy and would you still recommend the Z8 with the 800mm. I am currently using it with my Z9 and I’m interested in lightening my load. Thank you for the videos.
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe 15 күн бұрын
I would say the Z8 and Z9 are very similar in their handling with birds. I do like the Z9 though since it's easier to change to vertical orientation without having to twist arms. If you're wanting to lighten your load then you may have to forego some of the Z9 advantages like the grip, battery strength, etc.

I believe in this case I pre-focused and left it at that since I wa capturing them flying left to right. (No need to track them as they continue on the same focal plane.) I also use back-button AF so I can control when to focus and not focus.

I am planning to sell off mine. It is good in many of scenarios. But I guess I don't like the portraits backgrounds, and it's really bulky at 77mm filter thread. And at the price, I can have 2 lens and cam setup with 2 z6s and one of 85 another with 28 or 40. Even then the whole moving around will feel less bulkier with better bokeh, less ISO. It's really easier to put 3 primes and 2 z6 in a 9l sling bag, than the 24-120 and one more body with a prime.

Have you used Affinity Photo, ON1, Helicon Focus Pro, or Zerene stacker? Thoughts. And do any of these work better than the additional steps in Photoshop? And while we're on that topic which is better Lightroom more Photoshop? I shoot jewelry and watches for resale in a studio configuration.

It's more expensive than the sharper, less LoCA, better for portrait nifty fifty 1.8 - at amazon uk a discounted £625/635 for the 35mm/85mm £465 the 50mm which is sharper and only loses to the 85 for headshots

Does not appear to work with camera vertical, only takes one or two photos . If the focus point is bottom left it only takes one photo since that would be the top in landscape orientation. The further right the focus point is in vertical mode the more shots it will take since you are moving down if you were in landscape orientation. Maybe it’s my camera, Nikon z7ll with z24-120 lens, let me know what you think

Hi Taku, do you have a direct line to Nikon? Hoping they allow the focus shift mode to toggle and activate when pressing the shutter instead of going to menu and also not black out the screen during that duration in the next firmware update. The feature is only really useful when taking still tripod shots. Using it handheld is not really happening and we have to manually focus stack :/
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe 27 күн бұрын
The nature of focus stacking requires each frame to be in the same composition without anything moving between frames. This would require a tripod which is why it is activated this way. I'm not sure you would get good results handheld.

Assuming we set to take RAW images, and we turn on the prerelease. So it will take 30 prelease images as jpeg. But does the image taken on pressing the shutter button turn out to be RAW? Or also JPEG?
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe Ай бұрын
Prerlease is an option that you turn on or off in your Photo Shooting Menu (D3). When turned on, t's automatically enabled with C30 and above settings, but disabled when shooting RAW images.

I want lanscape photos with a round sun, no star effect, would the ND filter accomplish this?, and when is the best time to photograph the round sun?
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe Ай бұрын
The sun is always round. If it's above the horizon you will always see it round. To photograph it though, you can use an ND filter, or try closing down the aperture to the smallest you can on your lens. Sometimes that works too. But just remember the ND filters are not meant to be used to look at the sun directly. You'll need the solar filter for that.
@monsieurgolem3392
@monsieurgolem3392 Ай бұрын
@taku_kumabe yes, of course, but in terms of capturing the round profile; shooting wide open leaves a blob and stopping down star, which is cool but not for what Im going for.

Are you able to power this light portable such as with a VMount Battery?
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe Ай бұрын
Not this one. The FS line of lights are meant for indoor use. You can check out my take on the FC-120 light here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqKrq6iPaLCGmJY which you can power with a single V-Mount battery. For a more powerful option the FC-500C can also be powered with 2 V-Mounts using the optional Power Controller Unit, sold separately for the more powerful FC line of lights.

ND filters don´t do anything except cut light to ALL constant light sources the same. Both sides are the same. ND cuts power to sun and your light. It´s not a flash where (only) aperture affects the flash and shutter speed does not.
