Greetings from New Zealand. I just bought an old griddle (girdle) a couple of days ago. It was covered in surface rust and looked rather sad. Today after a good scrub, a thorough dry and two light seasonings it looks much better (I will do more). Came to youtube to see what I could find and so far your vid is one of only two I've found for old griddles. Thank you so much for sharing your Gran's recipe and taking the time to show us, I am looking forward to making some griddle scones or pikelets myself...so exciting!

You were going so well until the marmalade. Also I think those sausages would be way better grilled.

Boil for 14 hours in Sodium Hypochlorite, drain and beat against a fence post until knackered or until Scotland win the World Cup, whichever is quicker... Sauté with shallots and pomegranate seeds and throw it all in the bin. Go to the chippie ❤😂 Niseachs.... Love 'em or hate 'em you're not allowed to hit them with spade. 😮😂 Sgoinn.

I’am wondering if she used to tie a loop in the string and put it onto the tongs when she started cooking it and also used it to lift out the pudding when it was ready ..... that’s what my mum used to do with a big strong wooden spoon?? Also hers had suet not butter in??

Homemade scones or pancakes when I came home from school. Kept us going until supper time. In those days, making scones or pancakes was the way to use up sour milk. Fridges were a luxury appliance in those days

Oh I can taste it lol. My memory of my Mammie making dumpling was her using beef suet. I think it allows a "skin" to develop. I'm always going to try one but life gets in the way and it's not yet accomplished.

Good twist with the marmalade. I would have just fried the bread in that sausage fat instead of tipping the fat down the sink though.

I’d love to try this. If I asked nicely and bought a round of beers on a visit would I be able to pursuade someone to let me try it? I heard it can’t be sold in restaurants. I like poultry, game and fish so should be ok with it.

I wouldn’t do this, the marmalade burnt and got smoky af , took the nice smoky flavour from the sausages and made them sweet… ketchup will do

I would say that you put too much water in pot, dumpling should only be partially covered, your dumpling was quite wet when you removed from the pot, maybe half way, also flour on cloot, not on top of mixture too, my opinion, I've never used Margarine or suet in my dumplings as it's hard to find here in Canada, but if you like your dumpling, that's the main thing!
@thomasallison60263 жыл бұрын
I've been making clootie for 50 years...put your cloot into a large bowl to hold it while you fill.....use the loop of twine to lift it, ....drain on a " colender to set up for 20 mins and then on a tray into 400 F 200 C oven 20 minutes to dry the cloth....it will peel off easily and not break....leaves a nut brown skin on the dumpling.. today I use a plastic oven roasting bag instead of the cloot.... can also be put in a bowl or mold and steamed ,,,,,or even baked in loaf pans covered tightly with foil at 300 for 2 hours...check to see that skewer comes out clean if sticky another 1/2 hr or so ...foil off last 1/2 hour...a super chistmas cake
