My question is, are mussels is safe for consumption? As we know that mussles are filter feeder and accumulate heavy metal in its meals, does its harmful for human isn't?
@ThisIsAquaculture15 күн бұрын
Depends where they are grown. If you’re near more urban area you likely will have more metals. Some mussels are grown in deep water versus one closer to shore near sediments. Mussels aren’t usually grown in sediments so I would suspect they would have lower levels versus other shellfish grown on bottom.

I’m an independent grower doing similar aquaculture production of green freshwater filamentous algae, producing clean dried powdered Spirogyra and Cladophora and Oedogonium. My one-man low-input method yields about 1 lb powder per 1 hour of labor. The field appears to be wide open; problem is finding anyone else in the market/field to consult with.

I suppose so. Not sure chameleons care about aphids, thrips, or fungal gnats though. I think beneficial insects and plants would be a better option. But I do ❤️ chameleons. Especially Jackson’s Chameleons. 😁

Are there any concerns of microplastics being present in the fish that we rear for consumption due to the use of K1 and other plastic filter media?
@ThisIsAquaculture2 ай бұрын
We are concerned with plastics in general. I don’t think many plastics partition into muscle (fillet). Not saying they can’t through some cellular mechanisms or uptake through phagocytes cells just a low likelihood. Here is a recently published study. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0269749123022352#appsec1

@@ThisIsAquaculture Thank you so much for the info and resource. I was worried that I might have to get rid of my K1 and the bunched up nets that I use as bio media, but as long as it doesn’t get into the fillet, I’m fine with it haha. I loved your video. Very well done. I do have one question/comment. Isn't ionized ammonia LESS toxic to fish, as it cannot pass over the gill membrane as easily? Unionized ammonia binds to the gills and can kill the fish. In your video, according to your graph, there is more UNionized ammonia as the pH becomes more basic, which would mean it is MORE toxic to fish. Can you please clarify? Thank you.
@ThisIsAquaculture3 ай бұрын
Your correct!! Unionized is way more toxic… I’ll have go back and double check my video… it possible I said that wrong!!! Is like way more toxic. Not sure I can fix it if I did say that wrong other than put it in the video description…

Thank you very much for this very interesting video. Few videos are so concrete. Nate (@ThePelagicLumberjack), you mentioned the white color of the tank. We can think that this has a role in photosynthesis and therefore growth. Is that the case? And what is the level of impact? And if you have the name of your tank supplier, I'm interested. Looking forward to discussing. Many Thanks Benjamin (from the Brittany region in France)
@ThisIsAquaculture4 ай бұрын
I’ll get you some of those details. The problem with the white tank in my opinion is that you get a ton of unwanted algae grown in the walls which takes up nutrients and reduces light penetration which was one of the reason to go white in the first place. The other reason was to reduce heat from the sun.

Great video, Navigating California's regulations is always a challenge. I'm looking at setting up a moderately large home Aquaponic system next year, here in Atascadero. Thinking in terms of fish durability, I was initially considering catfish, but Koi is tempting because it I would avoid dealing with the regulatory issues of food production.
