I’m hearing the mourning doves go crazy rn. I haven’t heard them since I’ve been away from home during my service in the military, but now I get to enjoy the nostalgic call that I once heard from their past relatives when I was a small kid.

These are “Turtle Doves,” not Mourning Doves.

Yes, Turtle Doves are typically smaller than the Mourning Doves, which are of the Ringneck species. Mourning Doves are larger, slower fliers with wings more parallel to their bodies during flight. They also have distinctive rings around their necks. Turtle Doves have spots on their wings; especially the European varieties. Turtle Doves are very fast and powerful fliers and they typically have reddish-pinkish legs. They’re often taken by hunters in the fields during Dove hunting season. It sort of takes a trained eye to spot them. Turtle Doves also have wings to point more towards their tail when they fly.

Heard one this morning for the first time in a long time & just paused and reminisced about times long ago as a little girl at my grandmom's house. It made me sad & happy to hear the call as a little girl because I somehow realized if I grew older it would be a sound that would take me back to the very time I was in then & that so many things would have changed. Would my parents, grandparents, other relatives that I loved so dearly still be here, that is to say if I were still in existence also. Such a beautiful call 🕊❤

Are they making that noise from those holes in the side of their head? I don’t see their mouth opening

They don't open their beaks when they coo their mournful sounds. They puff their chest up as if filling a balloon in their gullet and send vibrations to their skin which makes that sweet sound.

I hear these birds almost every single day, and I even had one perched on a stone platform outside the school I work at. I always wondered if mourning doves were the same as actual doves, because my goodness! They may be common birds, probably, but if these aren’t some form of spiritual creature or a sign from God, Idk what is.

I like this background sound a lot. Sometimes with nature sounds there can be some birds or a water stream that is just too loud and comes to the foreground too much. But here everything is nicely balanced sounding. Very nice!
