We all know why Detroit fell, and it has everything to do with the racial demographics and who took over politics and governance. Just like South Africa.

So let me get this straight. A city that rapidly expanded and peaked at 2 million people following WW2 has since lost about 75% of that population. And you blame the demographics of the people who didn't flee the city?

Great video! The "white flight" of suburbanization and creation of new municipal governments also sucked property tax revenues out of certain neighborhoods and school systems. It's very similar to what happened in Los Angeles and San Francisco/Oakland after racial housing restrictions were lifted.

This feels like a really long video for such a simple explanation. Sort of like how a college kid stretches out an essay to meet the word count. I had to watch it at 1.25 speed just to make it sound normal.

interesting that when whites leave a community, crime goes up, property values decline, people leave. When blacks go from a minority to close to a majority, everything goes downhill. Can't they obey the laws and govern?

The short answer is in 1960 Democrats took over the city and in 1970 black Democrats led by Coleman Young took over. A double whammy if there ever was one. Coleman Young was a racist. A black nationalist who used black gangs and street toughs to attack whites. White people were so terrorized by the Young regime, they moved into houses in the suburbs that weren't near completion. In third world countries, we use terms like refugees to label the people who are forced to move to other areas of the world. In the US, we use terms like "white flight ". But it was the same thing. The two groups are identical. Third world blacks and first world whites being victimized by government sponsored racial violence and forced into relocation. And lastly, the criminals took over Detroit, once known as "The Paris of America" due to its beauty and systematically destroyed the city.

"America's abandoned city" just reported an increase in the population for the first time since 1957. Racial tensions, redlining and crime were obviously all problems but they were not unique to Detroit. Those explanations don't really address why Detroit fell so far compared to other cities.

overreliance on the auto industry is a big factor, also it has a new skyscraper and international bridge, i'd say in 20 years detroit is going to be a different city from what it was 1970-2010

There was much more to the Detroit economy than automobiles. Until the '80s when a new GM poletown auto plant was built on the site of the closed Dodge Main plant, no auto plants had been built in Detroit since the 1930s. The #2 computer company at the time, Burroughs was then in Detroit. Many products besides autos once were manufactured in Detroit. The development of the Interstate highway system allowed suburbs to grow across the U.S. so that the centralization that had made large rust belt cities more efficient no longer made economic sense. Sunbelt cities with the best interstate highway and commercial airline hubs access, pitched lower taxes and lack of labor unions. Yet unskilled southern whites and blacks continued to flood into cities like Detroit as the LBJ Great Society programs allowed them to remain in Detroit with minimal employment, leading to massive decay and collapsing tax revenue, causing rapid decline in schools, police and other services. Chicago preserved it's beautiful lakefront for the wealthy, Detroit built factories and warehouses on its beautiful waterfront, so that by the 1920s most wealthy Detroiters had moved to leafy semi-rural estates - leaving Detroit with too few influential vested urban advocates. When the upper middle class professions began leaving, the writing was on the wall for the demise of a great city.

Detroit's demise was/is caused by Dumbocraps. The city decline started in 1962 with the election of Jerome Cavanagh (D) but really accelerated with the election in 1974 of Coleman Young(D), the first black mayor.
