You are brave man, I could never put a $4k mic on my kitchen floor like that haha I keep my U87 on the stand 24/7! Something I am noticing the more I work with microphones is that the midrange is the most important part in the sound. We have so many tools to add high end sparkle and low end if we need to, but the midrange is something that needs to be captured right at the source. The U87 captures a more solid midrange imo so I prefer it over the Stam. I could carve some midrange out, add Slate Fresh Air, and make it sound just as exciting as the SA-87T does. That said, both mics sound great and you can get the job done with either one of them! Great video as always man!

@CarlMooreMusic 2 күн бұрын
😂😂😂 my Eden costs just as much as my u87 lol. I laid them down all gently on the floor 😂😂. I think Stam has a resistor swap that pushes a little more of the mids (don’t quote me) but he did send out an email concerning that adjustment. Nonetheless, I feel like I could’ve pushed more of the mids (a little above the boxy area) and that would’ve given more representation in that area but this is a mic I would pull out for sure for the same needs I’d use the u87ai. Tools nowadays are solid and I’m making sure I can fill my locker with the ability to get the job done regardless of what’s thrown at me. I think I’m extremely close to that overall goal. Thanks for the support bro!

Both mics sound good but there is a clear night and day difference imo. One thing that Neumann mastered is top-end clarity. Most lower end mics tend not to be fast enough to capture the high frequencies fidelity which leaves a sibilant blur in that 4k to 7-8k range. Neumann fixes this in the diaphragm itself while other companies try to fix it with eq'ing. Great Video

Much appreciation for checking out the video and commenting. I believe that’s a fair and pretty accurate observation of a lot of budget mics on the market. I don’t feel like the SA-87T falls into that category but I also feel the tube addition within the topology of this mic lends to the sound of the mic itself. I do need to get my hands on Stam’s non-tube version for this to be a fairer comparison but I was curious about how this would sound and a couple subscribers asked for the comparison. Isolated and in context I could get busy with both mics. I wasn’t totally a fan of u87ai’s in years past, but I do feel like it’s one of the best “all around source capture usable” mics on the market. Thanks for commenting seriously! Adds much needed legitimate and well articulated perspectives that make this channel valuable.

Just checked this today, dunno how I missed! As always the U87ai is the clear winner. Manley also has its particular tone (hat it or love it), Lauten sounds meh and Stam sounds strident, so different than the original Sony.
@CarlMooreMusic
@CarlMooreMusic 8 күн бұрын
I sent that Manley back. I wasn’t a fan at all. For the voicings around the setup I left the Eden in gentle mode but to me it’s the real Swiss Army knife of the bunch. I don’t think the SA800G was flattered the in this setup. I feel like I’ve heard it better on my own but I don’t think any of that 800G clones on the market now are voiced liked the original Sony C800. I think they all go for more of the C800G vibe. Ironically, I typically feel meh about u87s. Nothing special they just work. I’m more of 47/48 um57 guy than a u87. But having one won’t leave you disappointed. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting for sure! I appreciate this dialogue.

Hi Carl, I see that you have tried many replicas of the ELAM 251: WA-251, Antelope, Slate, Sphere... If you had to choose one, which would it be? Have you tried the Peluso 22 251 or GA-251 MKII? Thanks for your help and suggestions.

@@adproject8yo! So I think a few things are at play with the emulations… the system you use makes a difference in my honest opinion. I know that they all pretty much mention the emulations function fine on clean preamps but in my experience with each mic, they work best on their respective preamps and at one point each system had those preamps available. I don’t think Slate Digital does anymore. I have not used the 22 251 from Peluso and I’ve only heard files of the GA-251 MKII in my DAW. The Sphere has the most features of the emulation options. Hardware, I think the GA-251 would take the cake of the list you’ve mentioned. Mojave audio MA-1000 is intended to be David Royers take on a 251 too. That could be an option as well. Hope this helps somewhat

On female voice, I reckon the UT47 (or WA-47FET) would be better, it brings more depth to the low lower mids. But on male voice, especially deeper voices, the WA-47Jr brings good articulation, with less low mid muddiness. The WA-47jr is a good choice for guitar cab too, and for stereo overheads. And for distant room mic as well. Because it's smooth, and often you'd be shelving out the bass and low lower mids a bit anyway.

🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Dude, I think the Neumann sounds so much better. They do not sound the same at all. I mean, first of all, it's an imitation of Neumann. I know it's got, like, good sound and everything, but it should be based on itself, not on Neumann U87, you know what I mean? So that's by itself, it has no character in it. And, uh, I think it's, uh, and it's, it's, it's, uh, I don't know, I don't think you should have a mic like that. Have the mic. Do not have imitations of a mic. That's ridiculous, dude. It's like, try to pretend your, uh, your, your Corsa, uh, your, like, let me see, just try to pretend that your Chevy is a Ferrari, you know what I'm talking about? Get the real mic. I think your Neumann sounds a hundred percent better. I can hear it. I also own a Neumann too. So I know Neumanns are, like, they sound so good. It sounded better. Uh, I don't know.
