Such excellent people. I wish the long silences within and between Thomas’ and Bill’s sentences weren’t edited out. That’s part of their charm as humans!

Wow it is a pure love and respect I find here. Jazz is all about these things. Why I cherish Jazz, and for that matter, MUSIC? Because of this.

When MJ Williams mentions "Jack," she's referring to trumpeter Jack Walrath.

I found this while searching KZbin for "Jazz After Hours," which I wound up revising to a search for "Jim Wilke Jazz After Hours" before finding this. I was a regular listener of Jim's show, via KPLU, through a college radio station at the University of Central Oklahoma, in 1985. I had been playing alto sax since 1979 (by ear, as with every one of the several instruments I've played since I was a teenager), and in 1985 a friend and co-worker who was also a saxophonist when we weren't busy making a living as draftsmen in an Oklahoma City engineering firm recommended having a look at a Horn Trader store, where I found and purchased a student model trumpet. So, long story short, I've been a fan of Jim's rendition of Jazz After Hours, right up to a few years after moving to Seattle, where I've lived since 2009. I found, at that time, that Jim was no longer hosting the show.....I don't recall who was, but I wasn't impressed with what had happened to the show, to say the least. Oddly enough, when I was listening to Jim talking about the artists appearing at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley and was wishing I lived in Seattle, so I could go there, I had no idea that many years later, after moving to Seattle, I would never set foot in Jazz Alley. Sadly, today, in my late sixties, that is still the case, owing to the changes that have occurred in my life since about 2008, when my 31 year career as an architectural draftsman/CAD technician came to an end. I segued into a short stint in the IT field, until Microsoft pulled the plug on that and I wound up living on my Social Security in a HUD subsidized apartment, so going to Jazz Alley has become rather inaccessible for me. Now it's 2020 and I'm wondering what will happen in the wake of COVID-19, which wasn't on your radar when you guys made this video....nor on anyone else's radar, for that matter.

Delicious sound. I was not familiar with her sound, until reading she was the original voice with Rufus. And that she suggest Chaka Khan to take her place. This is total aweseome[ness]. Thank you for this post.

Totally enjoyed this conversation! (A shout-out to Janis-Hey, Janis!) Here in Durham NC, there's a jazz jam run by a drummer named Kobie Watkins. The college/pro session is preceded by a kids' jazz jam for young players ages 8 to 18. These jazz jams are held at a downtown coffee shop and they're well attended. It's a good setting for both girls and boys because they're surrounded by their friends and family. And, by the way, they're encouraged to stay and enjoy the grown-up jazz jam (which ends at a decent hour, 10pm). I recently attended a very cute StArt of Cool jazz camp concert (presented by the Art of Cool's Cicely Mitchell). Elementary-school kids (roughly 50/50 girls and boys) attended a one-week "camp" where they got their first exposure to musical instruments. They put on a concert, and surprisingly, each instrumentalist took a solo. And even though the solos were mostly awkward bleats and honks, the audience went wild with each attempt. It was also nice when the camp instructors, cool jazz musicians, freely gave out high-fives to the kids. Following the kids' concert was a performance by the instructors. The kids watched with rapt attention and I could see the beginnings of a whole new generation being introduced to some great music. If adults can keep coming up with this type of programming, girls will feel encouraged to get into jazz just as they have gotten into soccer (which has also encouraged both boys and girls).

I don't understand playing like this, the lyricism is gone, its just a bunch of jumbled up notes, if you want lyric value go listen to John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Sydney Bechet, and of course Charlie Parker. She has moments of great lyricism but I don't particularly the beginning. I am not saying that I am better than her, I am just saying. That there is a line between music and just "elevator" music. Not sure where she is. She plays with soul, but could still learn from the greats.
