I'm on the same page with what you're explaining. I have an e-commerce site with 180 listings, but only a few URLs have unique inlinks. This doesn't include the homepage or other general pages, just the listings. About 120 listings have a crawl depth of 2-7 and only 2 inlinks, or about 1%. I think the site's structure is a mess. I'm considering creating blog posts to help, but how can I improve the internal linking of these listings to make it more equitable? I realize the past developer might have prioritized certain listings, expecting users to discover more through search filters. However, this strategy is hurting the SEO rankings of the listings in the long term. Have you encountered a similar situation, and how did you improve it?

Great question! For an Ecom website, I think the best course of action is category and FBT links. So like you said with site structure, the category pages would help make these product listings more accessible. Category pages also work well since they usually have quite a bit of traffic potential. I also like websites that use frequently bought together links. So basically on the product page itself, you'd have a set of other related products that link out to each other. This might also be an issue with pagination if you have your paginated set to 5 results (with 50 other paginated pages). I'd maybe bump it up to 10+ so it would drop the amount of paginated pages to like 25. Category pages will also help out here too so buried products are more easily discovered. Lastly (and this might not apply, but it's worth looking into), you might want to consider adding an HTML sitemap to your website so search engines can easily access your links from that file (this is different from an XML sitemap. but realistically you should probably have both). That's what I think it could be without looking at the site, but I think more categories will be your best friend here. Also, I'm happy to take a quick look at the site if you want more specific callouts.

Hey man thanks I really appreciate it and sorry about the late reply. Not sure if you were still looking for the answer, but it would depend on the 1. Whenever I run a crawl in SF, I usually include the sitemap to make sure SF crawls every URL. Because of this, all of the inlinks in Screaming Frog will tell me each URL has an inlink (coming from the sitemap). I'd still check the inlinks tab to see where those links are coming from, but usually it's just the sitemap. And even though it's found in the sitemap and not the website, it's not considered to be an in-body link. So it's discoverable for search engines, but not users. If that makes sense.
