Yes the lyrics are “a native black lying there in ambush” An aborigine as opposed to an African black person. Its an important lyric because it shows that the recognition of evil is universal. The “native black” saw what captain Logan was doing to the whites and plotted to kill the evil man.

It's about a convict who scape from the terrible logan
@edmondironside240 Жыл бұрын
It’s about the convicts that were transported from the British Isles to Australia to work as slaves. Many were extremely poor people who were caught stealing food to survive. At a time when you could be hanged for stealing a loaf of bread. “I am a native of Erin’s island” means that the protagonist is Irish. During the 1840s and 1850s Ireland experienced The Great Famine which was a man-made famine exacerbated by a blight on the potato crop. The famine was man-made because there was plenty of food for people in Ireland at the time but it was owned by private companies and individuals that exported the food abroad for profit. The blight of potatoes made it far worse because people growing their own food to eat then had no food at all. During this time 2 million people fled Ireland to America to escape starving to death. And 1million people died. Why didn’t the government do anything? Because the government was run by British Protestants that hated the Irish Catholics and held them in complete contempt. During this time many stole food to stay alive and when caught they were transported to Australia as slaves until they “paid off the debt” this could be 5 years of penal servitude where after they would be given a farm to work the barren land and turn a desert into a civilisation. There was no way they would have been able to afford a ticket home - they were stuck there basically forever on the other side of the world from their families.
