I started with cheap figures also (25mm Magic the Gathering Arena of the planeswalkers and Dungeons and Dragons Temple of Elemental Evil). I started with Rustoleum in a can, but I would recommend Amazon Artecho acrylics to start with and Vallejo surface primer.

I use ProAcryl as well, I feel like the Army Painter is less intense or saturated than ProAcryl, but thins for glazes better. I was made aware of this by Dana Howl (youtube channel), but I agree with her fully. At this point, I would hold off as Vallejo is coming out with new paint too!

@@brlvideoproductionsThey are indeed less saturated and intense than not only Pro Acryl, but almost any other paint range out there. I was thinking about that but it was Juan Hidalgo's review that explained it for me. It seems Army Painter didn't just increase pigment by 300-700% in each of their paints. Pigment is the most expensive ingredient of any paint and Fanatic range is supposed to still be cheapest and most accessible on the market. The secret is that they probably added a lot of white (cheapest of all) pigment to each of their paints. That explains high desaturation of Fanatic colours and also fact that when you try to mix them it sometimes end as almost pure grey. I don't know your experiences, but I would like to know how was your experimenting with mixing different Fanatic colours.

Absolutely, I watched that video yesterday afternoon, JH is a genius! I definitely bought them because they were cheap, $3 a pop and it gave me a bunch of colors. I wouldn't be surprised if Vallejo comes in with something similar price but way better as far as color saturation. I am glad to have the fanatics, as I paint each figure in my army slightly different. I then tie the army together with the same three colors basically and spray them with Vallejo The Shifters iridescent. I have probably used Vallejo products the most at this point, I bought my ProAcryls while waiting for my Army Painter preorder to arrive. I have also used GW paints a lot. I could definitely see myself filling out my Vallejo color range if I got a good price on a huge set like I did the fanatics.

Having all those colors is more convenience than anything, I certainly could have saved a ton of money and just bought my original artecho set for 7$ and mixed everything I needed. I would probably be a better artist by now too- lol!

I have three more to paint before the iridescent coat, so we will find out if it's worthwhile soon. I used the matte because of its ability to make the paint stick, it contains polyurethane like Vallejo surface primer [what I usually use]. I wanted some of the turquoise color of the plastic the Tempest of Souls nighthaunt set was molded in to show through ( maybe a dumb experiment). I dipped my brush in pure ultra matte, then my paint watered down 50:50 with water, so probably 30-50% varnish?? Since the paint was so thin it was like a glaze and required several coats. This allowed some of the plastic color to show through. The more matte the varnish, the rougher the molecular surface and better the varnish primes ( as artists say, it gives it teeth). As this wonderful artist: The GrimDark Compendium channel has taught me, clothing is matte, organic material is satin and metallic are glossy- hence the matte. I want the iridescent subtle and the matte finish will give me this too. I didn't come up with this on my own, but I didn't come up this on my own ( I can't find the channel in my notes!!): other than silver she didn't mention has the most subtle iridescent effect as an undercoat, black the most spectacular, white pearlescent, colored undercoats emphasize the interference color of the two interference color in the Vallejo The Shifters paint I use. I.e. green will emphasize the turquoise and the brown may emphasize violet ( both are reddish), but still an experiment. Gloss paints are more iridescent than matte. I wanted to go with the black evilness coming up from the ground kinda violet iridescence, but at this point an experiment! Hopefully know how they turn out in a couple days!!

Yes astartes is probably the most famous video ever made absolutely fantastic. I probably spend more time watching lore videos, reading than I do actually building, painting and playing- but I love that stuff too. You sound like me, I spent four years reading WoW books before I played. I think it's better, you are more emersed. I also deep dive into the game to know the rules for older versions. Same thing with Doctor Who I went back and read/watched the old stuff when I got involved with the new shows after its re-release. I also can't wait for Henry Caville, loved the Witcher and play the board game! Thank you friend!
