It is telling that Roche and others reacted as he did when not specifically mentioned. Sometimes you recognize yourself in the words and narratives of others, and are compelled to 'shoot from the hip'.

its an hour and thirty minutes of "who hurt Pantini" but no introspection of what pantini did to himself
@jasonstevenson110Ай бұрын
Any newer fans who weren't following cycling in Pantani's time should watch this to get some appreciation of his feats and the culture of cycling back then. I feel privileged to have followed his rise when the sport was dominated by Big Mig and Jan Ullrich. I am not from Italy but Australia. I found this very sad. Marco will always be the greatest climber in history.

I can’t watch cycling anymore, I lost faith in it at the end of the Hinault era. Drugs, deals, politics and graft had always been a part of cycling, but before the big players in money started taking over it was at least an option for bit players to take a win, once that was gone it was like watching Groundhog Day always the same players winning on an too frequently basis. Once the money was available for the elite sports chemists to be hired and the likes of EPO came on the scene, the game was up. Most of the drugs up to that point were available to almost all, and shock horror a clean rider still had a chance to win or place. At that stage I could still watch it. I don’t hold it against Kelly for not speaking publicly about it, after all his livelihood would have been comprised, but surely he could have let it be known to Paul privately that he secretly agreed, same for Roche. I think after reading Laurent Fignons book young and carefree, I realised the game was up. I feel for Floyd Landis, he won using the same substance that those before and after got away with. Although I still rate him as a human and an achiever anyway, and he seems like a regular guy. I just watch tours from before the 90s there’s enough on you tube to keep me going for quite some time.

Embarrassing to watch. And this was made when everybody already knew about how this fraud achieved his wins. Nobody deserves death threats , but come on, this whitewash is ridiculous. Belga sport didn't even do that for Merckx or Vandenbroucke. In their episodes doping isn't t shoved under the carpet. I suppose mr. Blood Bag was only willing to cooperate if he was portrayed as a saint. Complete waste of time.
@FlashingPedals5 ай бұрын
Accusations, finger pointing, and ultimately, the guilt, has always been a highly emotive subject, within cycling. In LA's case, he got away with it quite well, up to a point. All the time, fawning media, carried on as blinkered fans. When it became glaringly obvious, outside of cycling, the media, turned, and the game was up. Then he simply became the easiest person, to lay the blame upon. History shows, that past and present, some riders, manage to escape the vicious glare, that others, have encountered. It will undoubtedly continue.

@@FlashingPedals Dont get me wrong, I completely acknowledge that Lance wasn't an exception when it comes to doping, although I would argue his case was one of the more severe ones. But, as I said, this series Belga sport didn't even ignore the doping past of their national hero Eddy merckx. It's acknowledged in the episode about him, as was the doping past of Frank Vandenbroucke in his episode. But going by this episode, you'd think Lanceyboy went to church every sunday and always helped his mum with the dishes. It's like watching a show about John Wayne Gacy, discussing all the great work he did for the democratic party, and the excellent construction company he ran, without mentioning the 33 dead teenage boys hidden in his basement. Just an absurd lack of journalistic integrity.
@FlashingPedals5 ай бұрын
@@gladtobeangry I think perhaps, your closing comment “lack of journalistic integrity” sums it up perfectly. It’s not exclusive to Belgian media (as similar conduct occurs, worldwide) unfortunately.
@gladtobeangry5 ай бұрын
@@FlashingPedals True. I´d say Belgian television is usually commendably thorough and objective when it comes to journalism. National broadcaster and all that, plus a fascination with the darker sides of life we usually don´t see in anglosphere media which can feel quite sanitized and `oh, let´s not talk about anything anyone might find offensive`. But I guess in this case, getting the cooperation of the big cycling star meant that the facts just were thrown overboard to make way for this flower garland of a show. It´s just a shame, because psychologically, Lance is an objectively fascinating guy. But you have to look at the bits he doesn´t want to show to get to the interesting things about him. Missed opportunity, and Oprah is the poster child for sanitized TV, so we didn´t get a lot from the moment he finally confessed either.

@@gladtobeangry whomever is to be critiqued, by a television program, if, they’re a national figure, then they have a balance to find, depending on tv ratings, popularity of the person in question & what their own reasons/motives are, for the exposure. It’s not simply just riding a bike.

Pantani had feelings thats killed him.. Lance NOTHING
@FlashingPedals5 ай бұрын
I think they both had an intense desire to win. Pantani, was more of an emotional rider (Italian characteristic) and those self same emotions, amongst the circumstances, surrounded & broke him. Armstrong, was mentally ruthless, and played that to his advantage. Ego, accelerated his own downfall, with the eventual outcome.
