Congrats! I am looking for the score, I do not find the editor, could you inform me about that?

Hi Matthieu, The soprano supplied the music, and I don't know where she got it. However, I see that it is available from "June Emerson Wind Music" @ www.juneemersonwindmusic.com/TRES-CANCIONES-MEXICANAS-52a435ab-4883-4519-9991-02b9f218af21.html?srsltid=AfmBOopYXmxZ2kvI-rK9BxPv5RTL0mqqy0HUC8zZKW_RaDCflJIcNPLd. It is nice music. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Pat, Thanks very much for your compliment! Nina and I hope all is well for you in sunny California. I am not sure how much longer we will keep playing our instruments. It is getting a bit harder these days. If you are ever in our area, please let us know.

Don't get me wrong, I've played this with a clarinetist before and it's incredibly taxing. For the pianist here, voicing could be a little cleaner and tone quality could be more clear. It isn't the sparkling shining sound needed for Mozart and this heavy-handed sound carries throughout the whole piece. To play a Mozart piece well is already hell to begin with. For a pianist to be a whole orchestral part is absolutely crazy. In the end, both the clarinetist and pianist performed with equal virtuosity here.

For a free copy of this version, or the mandolin-flute version, go to my page on IMSLP, which is at imslp.org/wiki/Category:Fried,_Joseph_Nicholas. You may need to sign up but there is no charge. If you have difficulty, email me at [email protected], and I will email a pdf of the clarinet-flute version to you.

What was your thought process behind this piece, if you don't mind me asking? My undergrad trio is interested in playing it. We're curious which instrument is which musketeer, or if that's how it goes. Thank you for your time!
@jnfmusic2 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for the question. I leave it to you to decide which instrument represents whom. I just write music now and then for fun, but have not had time to write for the last couple years. My method is this: A two or three measure motif enters my head, and I think what it suggests. Does it suggest adventure, sadness, love, fear, etc.? Then, a compatible title comes into my head, like "The Three Musketeers." The title is important because, from then on, it guides my writing to the end. Sometimes that works well and sometimes, not so much! Regards...Joe

Thanks a lot for this post. Hearing the concerto this way helps one appreciate both the basic quality of the music--that it sounds so good even in a piano reduction--and also the greatness of the orchestration of the full version.

Hello Mr. Fried. I love your music. I was wondering if a colleague of mine and I could have your permission to make videos of two of your pieces-"The Heavy Heart Duet" (flute and clarinet) and "The Mrs. Hobbs Duet" (flute and clarinet). I am a music professor and a professional musician. We are both members of the Charlotte Concert Band. Since March 2020, Covid 19 restrictions have severely limited our public performance opportunities. Thus, we are doing digital concerts for our wonderful patrons, music students, friends, etc. My website is www.emk-music.com (my contact information is there too). My other professional pages are below as well. I've also included links for one of the Charlotte Concert Band's videos, which Jim (the clarinetist performing with me on the duets mentioned previous) helped produce. Kindly respond at your earliest convenience. Thank you for making such great music accessible to us! Hi Erin, Yes, of course you have my permission to perform this music or anything else I have written (There are about 50 pieces on my IMSLP page.) This permission includes any paid performances you may have (for which you would owe me nothing). I am honored that you wish to play my pieces, and I hope you post your videos. I have subscribed to your page and to that of the concert band. Your performances are great. I am especially impressed by the concert band because it is so difficult to put so many musicians together virtually. You did a fine job! Keep up the good work. Joe

Thanks very much, Pat. This is something we recorded in 2011 - not too long after we got back into music, in our amateur way. The very good acoustics in Drinko Hall were helpful. We hope you are happy and healthy, and able to keep up your wonderful violin music in the difficult environment of Covid19. Best regards, Joe and Nina

Sally, You are a very reliable fan, and I really appreciate your comment! I hope all is well with you and the family. I write purely by the sound, and not with much understanding of theory. This piece starts out with a different sound so after I wrote it I tried to figure out why it was different. I think it starts with the Phrygian mode - similar but different from the minor mode. If you have a piano the Phrygian mode would be the sound of the 8 white keys starting with "E." Well, that is the extent of my knowledge of theory! Thanks again.
