When the train stops I think I can hear the electric turbine operating! I'm trying to figure out when they first started using those electric dynamo/generator turbines on trains to power the brakes and lights.

Those are trainphone antenna. It was what the PRR used to communicate between locomotive crew and caboose crews. Diesels wore them on the roof, steam locomotives had them mounted on the tenders, and on both ends of a caboose.
